FRS DFDS: the Strait of Gibraltar specialist

FRS DFDS (formerly FRS Iberia-Maroc) is the only ferry operator running all routes through the Strait of Gibraltar, connecting the south of Spain and Gibraltar with Moroccan ports and the autonomous city of Ceuta. Present in the Strait since 2000, when it launched operations on the Tarifa–Tanger Ville crossing, the company was integrated on 10 January 2024 into DFDS, the Danish ferry group founded in 1866 and Europe's leader in ferries and logistics (named World's Leading Ferry Operator 2025 by the World Travel Awards). This integration significantly strengthened the operator's capacity in the Mediterranean for both passengers and freight. Today, FRS DFDS carries over 1.3 million passengers, 280,000 vehicles and 125,000 freight units per year, with a fleet of seven modern, efficient vessels deployed on its active routes.

FRS DFDS top routes

FRS DFDS routes form the busiest bridge between Europe and North Africa. All combine short crossings, high sailing frequency and services tailored to tourists, residents, hauliers and cross-border workers alike. Below are the company's most popular connections:

FRS DFDS: view of Tanger Med port from the ferry deck, with the Moroccan coast in the background and the Strait of Gibraltar
Tanger Med port — the main gateway to Morocco by sea and destination of the routes from Algeciras and Gibraltar operated by FRS DFDS.

Algeciras → Tanger Med

FRS DFDS's most important route in terms of passenger and freight volume: it connects the largest port in southern Spain with Tanger Med, located less than an hour's drive east of Tangier. With multiple daily sailings year-round and a crossing time of 90 minutes, it is the primary gateway to Morocco for both tourists and international hauliers. Cars, motorbikes, motorhomes and vans are accepted. Check-in: 15 minutes before departure.

Duration: ~90 min · Year-round · Guide price from: ~€40/adult

Algeciras ↔ Ceuta

The Strait's public-interest route: declared a public service of general interest since 2008, it connects Algeciras with Ceuta in just 60 minutes with a minimum of five or six daily sailings in each direction. Operated mainly by the Ceuta Jet, which features a dedicated pet area on board (since November 2024) and a Gold Class service with XL leather seats and personalised attention. Guide price from €35 return. Check-in: 10 minutes before departure.

Duration: ~60 min · Min. 5–6 sailings/day · Price from: ~€35 return

Gibraltar → Tanger Med

The connection that allows travellers to reach Morocco directly from the British territory of Gibraltar, without having to cross the land border towards Algeciras. A particularly practical option for travellers coming from the United Kingdom or making a stopover in Gibraltar. FRS DFDS is the sole operator of this route, which links with the passenger and industrial port of Tanger Med.

Duration: ~60–80 min · Exclusive operator on this route

Tanger Med → Algeciras (Morocco–Spain direction)

The return leg from Morocco to Spain, which has the most demanding boarding procedure: you must arrive at the port 90 minutes before departure to complete Moroccan and Spanish passport controls. On board it is advisable to keep the white arrival form completed during the outbound crossing. Multiple daily sailings using the same fast ferry fleet as in the opposite direction.

Check-in: 90 min before · Duration: ~90 min · Year-round

Fleet and on-board services

The FRS DFDS fleet comprises seven modern vessels: mainly high-speed fast ferries with airline-style seating, plus the MS Tanger Express, a conventional ro-pax with cabins for longer crossings. The best-known vessels are the HSC Tarifa Jet, the HSC Ceuta Jet, the HSC Algeciras Jet and the MS Tanger Express. All vessels are adapted for passengers with reduced mobility (ramps, lifts and accessible toilets), and the company provides an assistance service for embarkation and disembarkation of passengers with disabilities.

FRS DFDS featured ships

FRS DFDS has seven active vessels, most of them high-speed craft (HSC) purpose-built for the short distances and high frequency of the Strait. Their naming is characteristic: fast ferries bear the name of the port from which they habitually operate, while the MS Tanger Express is the only conventional ro-pax in the fleet, complete with cabins.

HSC Ceuta Jet

The primary high-speed fast ferry on the Algeciras–Ceuta route. Since November 2024 it features the fleet's first dedicated pet area: a purpose-built, clean space adapted to the needs of animals, allowing travellers with pets to make the crossing without complications. It also offers the Gold Class service with XL leather seats and personalised attention.

HSC Algeciras Jet

The regular high-speed craft on the Algeciras–Tanger Med route. A high-speed catamaran with airline-style seating in the standard area and an outer deck. Designed for the high sailing frequency required on one of the busiest routes in the western Mediterranean, with multiple daily rotations year-round.

HSC Tarifa Jet

The fast ferry that for 25 years operated the historic Tarifa–Tanger Ville route, the shortest crossing between Europe and Africa. Since May 2025, with that route transferred to another operator, the Tarifa Jet serves as a fleet reinforcement vessel on other FRS DFDS operations in the Strait. Its name preserves the memory of the fastest crossing of the Strait (35 minutes at its quickest).

MS Tanger Express

The only conventional ro-pax vessel in the FRS DFDS fleet, with cabins, a restaurant and greater ro-ro cargo capacity. Typically deployed on the Algeciras–Tanger Med route for the heaviest passenger and vehicle loads, particularly during peak season (Operación Paso del Estrecho, July–August). Features a meeting room, cafeteria and rest area.

FRS DFDS harbours

FRS DFDS operates from four ports spread across Spain, Gibraltar and Morocco. The main hub on the European side is the port of Algeciras, and on the Moroccan side the modern port of Tanger Med. Ceuta is the only destination in Spanish territory located on the African coast.

FRS DFDS discounts

FRS DFDS offers a wide range of discounts based on age, group type and family status. To access discounts that require proof of eligibility (residency, large family status, military personnel…) the relevant documentation must be presented at the ticket office before boarding. In some cases, discounted tickets cannot be purchased online and must be bought directly at the port.

  • Infants (0–3 years): travel free (100% discount, no entitlement to a seat)
  • Children (4–13 years): approximately 50% off the base fare (taxes not included)
  • General large families: −20% (on presentation of a valid Large Family Card and ID for each member)
  • Special category large families: −50% (same documentation)
  • Students: special discount; check conditions and documentation requirements through your booking channel
  • Permanent residents: subsidised fare; residency rules available on frs.es
  • Military personnel and Civil Guard: special reduction on presentation of accrediting documentation
  • Groups: consult conditions for group bookings; contact customer services or via WhatsApp
  • Flexible fares: tickets with greater amendment and cancellation options available at the time of booking

Note: Exact percentages may vary by route, season and booking channel. Always check the current conditions at the time of booking on frs.es or in the iloveferry.com comparison tool. FRS DFDS has an official app (FRS/DFDS Ferry) for iOS and Android with a quick-booking system.

Accommodation and travel classes

As these are short crossings (60–90 minutes), the majority of FRS DFDS vessels are fast ferries without cabins. The accommodation offer is structured around seating classes for the fast ferries, and cabins for the conventional vessel MS Tanger Express:

  • Standard class (fast ferries): numbered airline-style seats in an air-conditioned passenger lounge; the most economical option on all routes
  • Gold Class (Ceuta Jet): premium area with XL leather seats, panoramic views and personalised on-board service; the most comfortable experience on the Algeciras–Ceuta route
  • Premium Class (selected routes): upgrade with extra space and additional services subject to availability of the assigned vessel
  • Cabins (MS Tanger Express): private inside and outside cabins for passengers preferring greater privacy; particularly available on the Algeciras–Tanger Med route during peak season
  • Outer deck: available on all vessels in the fleet; allows passengers to enjoy the scenery of the Strait in the open air

FRS DFDS tickets must always be collected at the port ticket office (there are no e-tickets or online check-in). Boarding passes are obtained at the counter on presentation of the booking reference number. During peak season (July–August, Operación Paso del Estrecho) it is strongly advisable to book well in advance, especially if travelling with a vehicle, as demand on the Algeciras–Tanger Med route can be very high.

Luggage, vehicles and pets

Luggage

Passengers are entitled to carry clothing and personal items necessary for the journey free of charge. No specific weight limits are published for personal luggage. Additional or oversized luggage may be subject to special conditions; it is advisable to check at the ticket office or on frs.es. Bicycles may also be transported, although it is recommended to confirm availability at the time of booking.

Vehicles

FRS DFDS accepts cars, motorcycles, motorhomes, vans and freight vehicles on all its active routes. Advance vehicle booking is compulsory, particularly during peak season. If travelling with a vehicle on the Algeciras–Tanger Med route, you must pass through the vehicle control area at the departure port before accessing the embarkation zone. On the Moroccan side, a Moroccan Police passport control is also conducted on board.

Pets

FRS DFDS accepts pets on all its vessels. The conditions are as follows: pets under 6 kg in an owner-provided carrier may access passenger areas and the outer deck; pets over 6 kg in a carrier may travel in the baggage area (garage) or on the outer deck; without a carrier, the pet must occupy a cage provided by the ship (advance booking compulsory). The Ceuta Jet also has a dedicated adapted pet area since November 2024. Dogs must wear a muzzle, short lead and collar when outside the carrier or cage. Guide dogs always travel in the passenger area free of charge and must comply with the same safety rules. Pets may not roam freely inside the vessel or on the deck. A pet ticket is required and, if requested, health documentation (EU pet passport, microchip, rabies vaccination). Check Moroccan and Spanish regulations on the admission of animals at borders before travelling.

Travel documentation

To travel to Ceuta, a national ID card is sufficient for Spanish and EU citizens. To travel to Morocco, a valid passport is compulsory (a Spanish national ID card is not accepted). On board, a white form is provided which must be completed and presented at the Moroccan Police control. Travellers from certain countries require a visa in advance; check the list of exemptions on the official website. Minors travelling alone or without their guardians require prior authorisation from the National Police. Passengers benefiting from residency, large family, military or Civil Guard discounts must present supporting documentation at the ticket office before boarding.

Operación Paso del Estrecho (July–August): During the summer campaign, demand surges sharply, particularly on the Algeciras–Tanger Med route. It is strongly advised to book your ticket and vehicle space as far in advance as possible. During this period, ports experience significant queues and waiting times; plan your arrival with plenty of time to spare. For specific information on the Operation, consult the Ministry of Transport website and frs.es.
