General information about Trasmediterránea

❤︎ Trasmediterránea (Compañía Trasmediterránea S.A.) is one of Spain's oldest and most historically significant ferry companies, founded in 1916 to serve the island and North African territories under Spanish sovereignty. For over a century it was the reference operator on routes between the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla. In October 2017 it was acquired by Naviera Armas for €260 million and fully integrated into the group from May 2018 under the name Armas Trasmediterránea, which combines both brands within a single operational structure. Today, under the group's umbrella, the Trasmediterránea brand continues on key Mediterranean, Strait and North African routes. Its most emblematic connections are the Valencia–Palma de Mallorca ferry, the Barcelona–Palma de Mallorca ferry and the Algeciras–Ceuta ferry.

Trasmediterránea accommodation and fare types

Trasmediterránea mainly operates overnight routes lasting 6 to 17 hours, so the choice of accommodation is particularly important. For crossings to the Balearic Islands (~8h) and North Africa (~8–17h) booking a cabin is recommended to arrive rested at your destination.

  • Standard seat: individual reclining seat in an air-conditioned lounge; the most economical option for crossings of up to 8 hours
  • Premium seat: greater width, full recline and more legroom; recommended for those travelling without a cabin on overnight crossings
  • Inside cabin (2 berths): private cabin without an exterior window for 2 people; ideal for couples and friends on overnight crossings
  • Inside cabin (4 berths): private cabin for up to 4 people; perfect for groups and families; most cost-effective per person
  • Outside cabin: cabin with a window or porthole; natural light during the crossing; available on main Balearic route vessels
  • Double cabin: double bed instead of berths; greater comfort for couples; higher price than the standard inside cabin
  • Family cabin: configuration adapted for families with children; 3 or 4-berth cabins with upper bunk and lower bed
  • Accessible cabin (PRM): wheelchair-accessible; available on main ro-pax vessels; advance booking recommended
  • Vehicle fare: includes the driver's passage and the vehicle-deck space; exact dimensions must be provided when booking; vehicle inaccessible during the crossing

Prices vary by season, how far in advance you book and vessel occupancy. The lowest fares are obtained by booking in advance during the low season (autumn–winter). In summer and Easter, cabin spaces sell out weeks in advance, especially on routes to Ibiza and Mallorca.

Luggage, vehicles and pets on Trasmediterránea

Luggage

Each passenger may bring hand luggage to the passenger lounge and a standard-size suitcase at no extra charge. Bulky luggage can be stored in the hold or in the vehicle boot — though there is no access to the vehicle deck during the crossing. On vessels with a luggage porter service (long Balearic and North African routes) luggage can be handed in at boarding for transfer to the cabin. Take to your cabin or lounge everything you may need during the night: medicines, documents and personal items.

Vehicles

Trasmediterránea accepts cars, motorbikes, motorhomes, caravans, vans and industrial vehicles on all its ro-pax routes. When booking you must provide the exact dimensions of your vehicle (length, height and width) to guarantee your vehicle-deck space. Drivers must arrive at the port at least 60 minutes before departure on Balearic routes, and at least 90 minutes before departure on routes to Ceuta, Melilla and North Africa due to customs procedures. The vehicle deck remains closed throughout the crossing. Motorbikes must be secured with straps or lashings at boarding.

Pets

Pets travel in designated areas: an air-conditioned indoor kennel (available on equipped vessels) or the outdoor deck. Some vessels have pet-friendly cabins. Required documentation: European pet passport with implanted microchip and valid rabies vaccination. Dogs must be on a lead outside the kennel; potentially dangerous breeds also require an approved muzzle. Pets are not allowed in indoor common areas. It is recommended to book the pet space when making the main reservation, as designated areas have limited capacity.

On international routes to Ceuta, Melilla, Morocco and Algeria you must carry a valid passport or national ID card and meet the customs requirements of your destination country. For pets on routes to Morocco or Algeria, check the specific current veterinary requirements before boarding. In peak season (summer, Easter, Operation Crossing of the Strait) book in advance: cabin and vehicle-deck spaces sell out weeks ahead.
