Tunis to Genoa Ferry: Direct GNV and CTN, Back to Europe by Car

To get from Tunis to Genoa by ferry, you can sail with GNV, direct and all year round, or with CTN, the Tunisian company, which has more departures in summer. Both ships leave from La Goulette and carry cars, motorbikes, motorhomes and pets.

GNV check-in at La Goulette opens eight hours before departure and closes three hours before. With a car, arrive when it opens: there are police, customs and a check of the vehicle registration document.

It is the usual return trip for many TRE, Tunisians resident in Europe. CTN reserves preferential quotas for them in summer; to board for Italy GNV asks for a Schengen visa, with some exceptions: bring your residence permit.

The timetable shows the departures for the date you choose. GNV has departures all year round and CTN has a denser summer calendar and a more limited winter one. How long does the ferry from Tunis to Genoa take?

Almost a day at sea on GNV's direct service. The timetable shows the duration of each departure. Add the time for customs and boarding at La Goulette, and for disembarking at Genoa if you have a car.

Two ferry companies cover the route:

  • GNV: direct and all year round, with pet cabins, halal menus and prayer rooms. In La Goulette it has an office on Avenue Habib Bourguiba.
  • CTN (Compagnie Tunisienne de Navigation): sails from La Goulette and has a stepped-up summer season and a winter service. For TRE, it reserves preferential quotas of passenger and car places on the dates of the return to Europe. It also runs Zarzis–Genoa in summer.

Tunis to Genoa ferry price

The price you see above is the lowest we have found for one adult without a car. It depends on:

  • The season: the TRE return in summer concentrates demand.
  • The ferry company: GNV and CTN have different fares and services.
  • The accommodation: seat or cabin.
  • The car: paid separately.

CTN has an early-booking fare all year round, a family fare for three to seven people, a fare for travelling without a car and payment in instalments in high season. These are CTN's conditions and may change from one season to the next.

Children, TRE and special fares on Tunis to Genoa

As this is an international route, there is no resident or large family discount. The benefits come from the ferry companies: CTN reserves preferential quotas for TRE in summer and GNV mentions discounts for returning Tunisian residents. Children and babies have their own fare: give the age of each passenger. Minors of Tunisian nationality need the express authorisation of the Tunisian parent to leave Tunisia, according to the Foreign Ministry.

Tunis to Genoa ferry with a car

With a car, on leaving Tunisia you are asked for the vehicle registration document you were given on entry, valid three months according to the Foreign Ministry. The car must leave the country with the person who brought it in. Bring the original vehicle registration document, valid insurance, driving licence and the passports of everyone in the car.

If you are a TRE and have brought in a car under duty-free import, the conditions of the exemption and of the car's age are explained in the Tunisian press, citing customs. We do not treat them as settled: check the official website of Tunisian customs.

Tunis to Genoa ferry with a dog

GNV has "Four-legged friends cabins" (Cabinas Amigos de cuatro patas), with linoleum floors, daily disinfection and late exit before docking; bring a lead, muzzle, carrier and food. CTN does not allow dangerous dogs to board. To enter the EU from Tunisia, a third country, you need a microchip, a rabies vaccination given after the chip and the original health certificate, and sometimes an antibody titration test. This rule comes from a French note; for Spain, check with the Ministry of Agriculture. More information in travelling by ferry with a dog.

On board: cabin, halal food and pets

GNV offers halal menus and prayer rooms on board, and cabins with a Cabin Plus option. On a long crossing, book a cabin if you can, especially if you are travelling with children or a pet. The car decks are closed during the crossing: take up to the cabin whatever you need.
