Ciutadella to Barcelona Ferry with Baleària: Times and Tickets
With Balearia · 10 to 15 weekly departures · 3:30 hours - 9 hours
To get from Ciutadella to Barcelona by ferry there is just one ferry company, Baleària, which sails from the port of Ciutadella (west coast of Menorca) to the port of Barcelona. There are fast ferry and conventional ferry departures.
The fast ferry is the quickest way to cross from Menorca to the mainland: it takes a few hours. The conventional ferry is slower, has cabins and lets you sleep during the crossing.
You can travel on foot, or with a car, motorbike or dog. If you live in the Balearic Islands, you get a 75% discount on your passenger ticket, which does not apply to the car or the pet.
If your port is Mahón rather than Ciutadella, the Mahón Barcelona route is run by GNV and Trasmed: you will find its page further down.
Ciutadella to Barcelona ferry timetable
Below you have the departures for the date you choose, with departure time, arrival time and type of ship. Two formats run side by side on this route, and it is worth checking which one each departure is before you book:
- Fast ferry: a short daytime crossing. It is the option for a there-and-back trip in a few days without losing a night.
- Conventional ferry: slower, with seats and cabins. It usually leaves at the end of the day and arrives in Barcelona in the morning. Some departures may call at Alcudia; the timetable tells you.
Frequency goes up in summer, at Easter and on long weekends, and drops in winter. On windy days the fast ferry is the first to be changed: read the tips section below.
The return, from Barcelona to Ciutadella, is on the Barcelona Ciutadella ferry page.
Indicative schedules and subject to variation by the ferry company for operational reasons without prior notice.
How long does the ferry from Ciutadella to Barcelona take?
It depends on the ship: the fast ferry takes a few hours and the conventional ferry quite a bit longer, because it is an overnight crossing. You can see the exact duration of each departure in the page and in the timetable above. In rough seas, a fast ferry may take longer than usual or change its departure.
The ships on each departure appear in the timetable. Open each one's page to see its accommodation before you book.
Who runs the Ciutadella Barcelona ferry: Baleària
Baleària is the ferry company on this route: it links Barcelona with the port of Ciutadella, on the west coast of Menorca, while GNV and Trasmed link Mahón with Barcelona, at the other end of the island. If your port is Ciutadella, you do not need to book with them: they do not run the Ciutadella–Barcelona route.
What sets Baleària apart on this route:
- It combines fast ferry and conventional ferry on the same journey, so you can choose between speed or sleeping on board.
- It notifies you by WhatsApp or SMS if anything changes, as long as you gave a mobile number when booking.
- It has online check-in: the digital boarding pass arrives after check-in, which opens 72 hours before in My Bookings, and on some fast ferries you can choose your seat.
- It has a points programme, Baleària Club, which earns points when you board, and more if you travel with a car.
At I Love Ferry you see its departures alongside those of other ferry companies and book at the ferry company's price.
Ciutadella Barcelona ferry price
The price you see above is the lowest we have found recently for an adult without a car. Your ticket depends on four things:
- The type of ship: the fast ferry and the conventional ferry do not cost the same.
- The accommodation: standard or superior seat, or a cabin on the conventional ferry.
- The date: July, August, Easter and long weekends cost more; in low season there is usually more room.
- The vehicle: the car is paid separately from the passenger and depends on its dimensions.
As on every Baleària route, some fares let you change the date or time and others do not. Check the fare conditions before paying if your plans might move.
Balearic Islands resident discount: Ciutadella Barcelona
If you are registered as a resident in the Balearic Islands, Baleària gives you a 75% discount on the passenger ticket on this route. It applies to the person, not to the car (except with an authorised parking card), nor to the pet or extra services such as wifi or meals.
- Say you are a resident in the search on iloveferry.com/ferris. With Baleària, all passengers on the same booking must be residents; if you are travelling with someone who is not, make two bookings.
- Residence is checked electronically. If that fails, you will have to go to the ticket office with your DNI or NIE and your certificate of residence.
- Minors need their DNI or NIE, the family book (or a document proving their relationship to the adult) and their certificate of residence.

Large family discount on the Ciutadella Barcelona ferry
As this is a domestic route, large families with a Spanish card get 20% (general category) or 50% (special) off the passenger ticket. It does not apply to the car. Each traveller needs their valid individual card and their identity document. Baleària asks to see them at the ticket office the first time, so do not expect to receive the digital boarding pass for that trip: go in good time. Details in ferry with large family discount.
The resident discount and the large family discount are different concessions: all passengers on a booking must have the same one. If several of you are travelling with different discounts, book separately.
Ciutadella Barcelona ferry with a car
You can take a car, motorbike, van or motorhome. When searching, enter the type of vehicle, its make and model and, if it is long or tall, its real dimensions: the price depends on them, and what you declare has to match your vehicle.
In Barcelona the car boarding quay changes depending on the ship. According to Baleària, the conventional ferry to Ciutadella boards cars at the Lepanto quay, and the fast ferry at a quay next to the TF1 terminal. This may change because of the weather or port operations: Baleària announces it through its usual channels, so check the notice before heading to the port.
The port of Barcelona is a low-emission zone. If your car has no environmental label or is old, check whether it can enter before you go.
Ciutadella Barcelona ferry with a dog
Baleària accepts dogs on this route, with these options:
- In the lounge: dogs up to 10 kg, in a carrier of at most 50 x 40 x 25 cm.
- Pet-friendly seat or cabin: on some ships. The cabin takes up to two pets of 30 kg each.
- Kennel in the hold or on the outside deck, for larger dogs.
On a lead and, where required, muzzled. Add the pet when you book: the search shows you the supplement. More information in travelling by ferry with a dog.

How to get to the port of Ciutadella
The commercial port of Ciutadella is on the west coast of Menorca, about 45 km from Mahón. There is no train on the island: you get there by car, taxi or bus from the other towns. From Mahón allow around three quarters of an hour by car.
With a car, allow extra time: in high season a lot of people gather at the port. Without a car, Baleària asks you to be at the port in good time, normally one hour before departure, and the instructions on your boarding pass take precedence.
Arriving in Barcelona: Baleària terminals
Baleària has its foot passenger office in Barcelona at the Terminal Norte, next to the World Trade Center. If you travel by car, the boarding quay depends on the ship, as we explained above. From there there are taxis and public transport to the city centre.
Always check the exact terminal on your ticket: Baleària announces the location a few hours before departures from Barcelona, and it may vary.
Documents for going from Ciutadella to Barcelona
This is a domestic route: adults travel with a valid DNI, NIE or passport. For the resident discount, also bring your certificate of residence, in case it has to be proved at the ticket office. Minors carry their DNI or family book. With a car, have the vehicle registration document and the driver's licence to hand.
I Love Ferry tips for going from Ciutadella to Barcelona
- If it is windy, check the fast ferry notice. It is the ship most sensitive to sea conditions. Baleària offers alternatives whatever the fare: changing the time, a nearby port or the booking. If a sailing is cancelled for bad weather with no alternative, a free change or full refund. To be notified, enter your mobile number when you book.
- Do not confuse Ciutadella with Mahón. They are about 45 km apart. The same ticket is not valid from one port to the other, and the GNV and Trasmed ships to Barcelona leave from Mahón, not Ciutadella.
- Do the online check-in. The confirmation arrives without a boarding pass; the digital pass arrives when you check in (72 h before) or, failing that, about 24 hours before. With a large family discount, or if any detail fails, you will have to go to the ticket office.
- With a car, confirm the quay in Barcelona. It depends on the ship and may change on the same day.
- If the delay is long, Baleària pays partial compensation on the ticket or a voucher for another trip, and you can claim it up to two months later. There is no compensation if the delay is due to dangerous bad weather.
