Castavi Jet Trasmapi

Castavi Jet

Castavi Jet

âš“ The Castavi Jet is the flagship fast ferry of Trasmapi for carrying passengers, vehicles and rolling freight on the Ibiza–Formentera route. She is the only ship in the Trasmapi fleet that can take cars, vans and motorbikes on board along with up to 450 passengers, which makes her the benchmark vehicle ferry in the Pitiusas. She covers the 17 km between the port of Ibiza and La Savina (Formentera) in around 35 minutes and sails all year round, low season included.

She is a high-speed aluminium catamaran built in 1997 by Austal Ships in Fremantle (Australia), one of the best-known fast ferry shipyards in the world. She originally ran under the name Turgut Reis I for the Turkish operator Istanbul Deniz Otobusleri (IDO) until 2013, and was bought by Trasmapi in July 2014 after a refit of more than five months at the Huelva shipyards that involved replacing the propulsion system, completely renewing the interior and repainting the hull in Trasmapi's blue livery. She made her first commercial sailing for Trasmapi on 7 July 2014 on the Ibiza–Formentera route.

Trasmapi belongs to Grupo IMG (Insotel Marine Group), a wholly Balearic shipping group present on all four islands with more than 50 years of tradition in passenger transport in the Pitiusas. Every year the operator carries close to one million passengers on its main Ibiza–Formentera route, making it the number one company on this crossing.

History and background of the ship

The Castavi Jet was built in 2007 at the Australian Incat Tasmania yard in Hobart under the name Incat 069, as one of the most advanced catamarans of its generation. After working a number of international routes, she was bought by Trasmapi and renamed Castavi Jet — a name that refers to the islet of Cas Tavi, one of the small rocks dotted through the es Freus channel between Ibiza and Formentera. At 43 metres long and with room for 450 passengers, she is the largest vessel in the Trasmapi fleet.

She works the Port of Ibiza–La Savina (Formentera) route on a regular basis and is in particular demand in high season thanks to her generous outside deck and children's play area. Her combination of speed (over 30 knots) and capacity makes her the obvious choice for groups and families crossing es Freus in summer.

Boarding ports: Ibiza and La Savina (Formentera)

The Castavi Jet runs between two very well connected and easily reached ports:

  • Port of Ibiza (Eivissa): the Trasmapi ticket desks are at counters 3 and 4 of the Ibiza ferry terminal (Avinguda de Santa Eulària des Riu s/n). Ibiza airport is about 7 km from the port (10–15 minutes by car or taxi). Trasmapi runs transfer services from the airport to the port.
  • Port of La Savina (Formentera): this is the only way in and out of Formentera by sea. From here, Trasmapi offers shared bus transfers to the island's main hotels and apartments. Car and scooter hire is also available right on the quayside.

Important if you are travelling with a vehicle in summer: from June to September, vehicle traffic on Formentera is regulated by the FormenterEco scheme. You must apply for authorisation in advance at formentera.eco before boarding with your car. Restrictions on bringing vehicles into Ibiza also apply during that period under Balearic Law 1/2024. Check both sets of rules before you book.

We recommend arriving at the port at least 60 minutes beforehand if you are travelling by car, and 30 minutes as a foot passenger. In July and August, allow extra time.

Fares, discounts and how to book

A passenger ticket on the Castavi Jet starts at roughly €15 each way in low season for non-residents, and can reach close to €30 in July and August. Vehicle tickets are priced separately and are worth booking in advance, especially in summer, as car spaces are limited.

Trasmapi also sells an open ticket (OPEN): you can travel on any sailing on your chosen day without fixing a time, subject to availability when you board. Open and fixed-time tickets cost the same.

Available discounts:

  • Formentera resident: 89% off the passenger fare. It applies to the passenger fare only, not to vehicles.
  • Ibiza or other Balearic Islands resident: 75% off the passenger fare. Prove your residency with a Spanish ID card (DNI) or foreigner's ID number (NIE) when you book online.
  • Carnet Jove Illes Balears: a further 20% discount that can be combined with the resident discount. Available when buying at the ticket desk.
  • Children and babies: babies under 2 travel free. Ask about discounts for older children.
  • Bicycles and motorbikes up to 125cc: they travel free on the Ibiza–Formentera route.
  • Pets: they travel free of charge on board the Castavi Jet.
  • Early online booking: the lowest prices come from booking ahead at trasmapi.com.

  • An onboard sewage collection and treatment plant, in line with current environmental regulations.

Sustainability and environmental commitment

Through its parent group IMG (Insotel Marine Group), Trasmapi takes an active part in environmental responsibility initiatives. The Be Blue IMG Care project is the group's corporate social responsibility framework, built around the greatest possible respect for the natural surroundings of the Pitiusas islands and for the marine environment. The operator supports the Save the Posidonia Project campaign to protect the Posidonia oceanica meadows, declared a World Heritage Site along with Formentera. The Castavi Jet's engines have been renewed several times to improve efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of her crossings.
