Ancona to Igoumenitsa Ferry: Minoan and Superfast, with or without a Stop

With Grimaldi Lines

To get from Ancona to Igoumenitsa by ferry, Minoan Lines and ANEK Superfast operate all year. It is the most regular Italy–Greece route and the one most used to reach northern Greece with a car.

In winter the ship goes direct. In summer some sailings call at Corfu, so the duration varies. You leave in the afternoon and sleep on board.

Italy and Greece are in the EU: an ID card is enough. Bring a physical driving licence, the digital one is not accepted. In Igoumenitsa your car may be checked for security.

Ancona to Igoumenitsa ferry timetable

The timetable shows the sailings for the date you choose. Minoan follows two calendars: a winter one, with the ship going direct from Ancona to Igoumenitsa, and a summer one, with a stop in Corfu and sailings every day of the week. In the winter calendar of the last season we checked, one day of the week had no sailing.

ANEK Superfast works with blocks of dates during the year, with high season in July and August, and leaves out its maintenance weeks. The sailings of both ferry companies appear together in the timetable.

How long does the Ancona to Igoumenitsa ferry take?

One night and part of the next day: you leave in the afternoon and arrive in Igoumenitsa in the middle of the afternoon. In summer the stop in Corfu makes the sailing longer. The timetable shows the exact duration of each one. If you continue to Patras, the journey is longer.

Two ferry companies operate:

  • Minoan Lines (Grimaldi group): all year; direct in winter, with a stop in Corfu in summer. It asks you to report two hours before and has no fast check-in on the routes to Greece.
  • ANEK Superfast: with sailings all year according to its calendar of blocks, and possible stops in Corfu, Igoumenitsa and Patras. It asks for two hours' notice, and three for motorhomes according to a reseller.

If your final destination is further south, the ship may continue to Patras: check the duration and stops of each sailing in the timetable.

Ancona to Igoumenitsa ferry prices

The price you see above is the lowest we have found for an adult without a car. On this route, what moves the price most:

  • The calendar: the ferry companies' summer blocks are the most expensive, and the winter ones the cheapest.
  • The accommodation: seat or cabin; the night on board makes many people choose a cabin.
  • The vehicle: paid separately and according to dimensions; motorhomes have their own fare.
  • The ferry company: compare both; they do not always include the same.

Children and discounts on Ancona to Igoumenitsa

As this is an international route, there is no Spanish resident or large family discount. Children and babies have their own fare: enter the age of each passenger. The ferry companies' early-booking offers have a deadline: check the current ones in the search tool. All passengers, even babies, need a valid identity document.

Ancona to Igoumenitsa ferry with a car

It is the most used route to reach Greece with a car. Minoan closes the garages during the crossing: take to the cabin whatever you need. If the car runs on LPG, tell the crew when boarding. Enter the type, make and model when searching.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns of something important: at the ports of Igoumenitsa and Patras vehicles are checked in case migrants are hidden, and transporting migrants, even unknowingly, is a serious offence in Greece. Lock the car and do not let anyone approach it while you wait.

Ancona to Igoumenitsa ferry with a dog

Superfast requires you to register the animal's details when booking. Minoan has a pets section on its website whose content we have not been able to read, and an aggregator indicates that on some routes only Minoan accepts pets: check the policy of the ferry company of your sailing before paying. For the animal's documentation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs refers to the Ministry of Agriculture. More information at travelling by ferry with a dog.

On board the Ancona to Igoumenitsa ferry

The crossing includes a night, so almost everyone books a cabin. The garages are closed: take medicines, documents and chargers up to the cabin. The ship may stop in Corfu: you do not need to disembark if your destination is Igoumenitsa.

Ports of Ancona and Igoumenitsa

How to get to the port of Ancona

The port of Ancona is at the northern end of the seafront, a 15-20 minute walk from the centre. The railway station is about 2 km away. From the A14 motorway, exit at Ancona Nord or Sud and follow “Porto – Imbarchi”.

Minoan and Superfast ask you to report at least two hours before; arriving late can cost you boarding. With Minoan, go to the terminal desk because there is no fast check-in.

Arriving in Igoumenitsa: the Egnatia motorway and buses

Igoumenitsa has its central quay on the south coast. From there, the Egnatia Odos motorway leads towards Ioannina and Thessaloniki, and there are KTEL buses to Ioannina, Thessaloniki and Athens. For Patras there is no direct sea connection from Igoumenitsa: you get there by road or with the ship that continues to Patras from Ancona, on the sailings that do so.

Documents for the Ancona to Igoumenitsa ferry

  • Valid ID card or passport, for all passengers, including children and babies. Without a document there is no boarding and no refund.
  • No visa or vaccinations for EU citizens.
  • Physical driving licence: Greece does not accept the digital DGT licence.
  • With a car: vehicle registration document and insurance.

Minoan belongs to the Grimaldi group. Grimaldi notice: the old paper ID card is no longer valid for travelling to Spain or Greece with Grimaldi (since August); bring an electronic document or a passport.
