Barcelona to Algiers Ferry: Overnight Crossing, Car, Visa, Documents

With Balearia · from 19 h 30 min

The ferry from Barcelona to Algiers is operated by Baleària between the port of Barcelona and the port of Algiers. It is an overnight crossing with a cabin and there are only a few sailings a week: check in the search tool which days there is a ship.

If you hold an Algerian passport or dual nationality, Algeria considers you Algerian. To return to Spain as a non-EU national, bring a valid passport and a valid residence permit, or a Schengen visa.

Barcelona to Algiers ferry timetable

This is a line with only a few sailings a week and the crossing includes the night. The search tool shows the days and times for your date, in the local time of each port: compare them, because they may not match Spanish time. First check the calendar and plan the trip around the days with a ship.

In July and August, places with a car and a cabin sell out months in advance.

How long does the ferry from Barcelona to Algiers take?

Less than a day, with the night on board. The timetable shows the duration of each sailing. Add boarding in Barcelona and the police and customs checks in Algeria, which can take longer with a car.

The route is operated by Baleària, which links Barcelona and Valencia with Algiers and other Algerian ports. It is the shipping company for the Spain–Algeria lines, previously shared with the former Naviera Armas (now operated by Baleària).

GNV has three routes to Algeria, but from Sète and Civitavecchia: none leaves from Spain. If GNV is the company you are looking for, you would have to get to France or Italy on your own.

Barcelona to Algiers ferry price

The price shown above is the lowest recent one for an adult without a vehicle or cabin. The total depends on three things:

  • The accommodation: seat or cabin. On an overnight crossing, the cabin makes the difference, especially with children.
  • The car: you pay according to its type and dimensions; enter the make and model when you search.
  • The date: in summer prices go up and places sell out sooner.

Barcelona to Algiers ferry with a car

Taking the car is the reason many families choose the ferry over the plane: you travel with your luggage and your things, without weight limits.

  • Baleària does not board cars with provisional plates or with the carte grise crossed out.
  • If the driver is not the owner, an original written authorisation is needed, signed by both and stamped by a notary, town hall or public body, with a copy of the ID card or passport of both.
  • In summer, between 15 June and 15 September, Algeria has restricted the boarding of new cars or cars under three years old, vans and goods vehicles at the port of Algiers. Check before booking whether this is still in force.
  • A non-resident may keep the car under temporary import for up to 90 days, extendable by another 90 with customs authorisation. It must leave with the person who imported it.

If you want to leave or sell the car in Algeria, that is an export with different procedures: check before buying the ticket. Bring everything printed.

Travelling to Algeria with a dog from Barcelona

Baleària accepts pets: up to 10 kg in a carrier in the lounges, a pet-friendly cabin for a maximum of two animals and, on some ships, a kennel. Add it when you book to see the available places.

Algeria requires a microchip, a passport with vaccinations, a rabies vaccination of more than 30 days and less than a year, and a veterinary certificate endorsed 48 hours before leaving Spain; quarantine is possible. More information in travelling by ferry with a dog.

Ports of Barcelona and Algiers

How to get to the port of Barcelona

Ferries to Algeria leave from the ferry terminals of the port of Barcelona; your ticket shows the exact terminal, and it is worth confirming it before leaving home because the port has several. With a car, follow the boarding signs and show the documents of all travellers.

Arrive with time to spare: with a car and in high season, boarding is slow.

Arriving in Algiers: how to continue your trip

The port of Algiers is in the capital, by the bay. The airport is about 20 km away and Tizi Ouzou about 100 km; Constantine is about 380 km away. With a car, the journey inland is by road and can take several hours.

If your destination is in the west, first look at Valencia to Oran ferry or Almería to Oran ferry, which save you driving.

Documents for travelling from Barcelona to Algiers by ferry

If you are a Spanish citizen

  • Passport with more than six months' validity; the ID card is not valid.
  • Visa required, not issued at the border. Apply at least four weeks ahead and make sure it covers all your dates. The Algerian Consulate General in Barcelona serves Catalonia, Aragon, the Balearic Islands, Navarre, the Basque Country, Cantabria, La Rioja and Burgos.

If you hold an Algerian passport or dual nationality

  • Algeria considers you fully Algerian and consular assistance is limited. Check with your consulate which passport you must use to enter and leave.
  • With a car and residence abroad, the shipping companies ask for a copy of the passport and of the residence permit or visa.
  • Algerian minors: parental authorisation valid for three months and exit with an Algerian passport.

If you live in Spain without being an EU citizen

To return to Europe you are asked for a valid passport and a valid residence permit, or a Schengen visa. With inadequate documents, entry may be refused and the ticket not refunded.

Algeria has limits on money: the dinar is not convertible and cannot be taken out. Declare cash if you exceed the thresholds and carry medication in its original packaging.
