Tanger Med to Algeciras Ferry: Operators, Car and Documents
With Balearia · 35 to 40 daily departures · 1:30 hours - 2 hours
To get from Tanger Med to Algeciras by ferry there are several ferry companies: Baleària, DFDS and AML. You cross the Strait of Gibraltar from the port of Tanger Med to the port of Algeciras, with departures spread throughout the day.
DFDS has taken over from Naviera Armas (now operated by Baleària) on this line. Old tickets are still valid: if you have one, you do not need to do anything until your date.
If you travel with a Moroccan passport you need a Schengen visa or a valid EU residence permit. Baleària checks your authorisation before boarding and may deny you access.
With a car, Baleària requires a closed ticket for the exact date at Tanger Med: you cannot enter the port with an open ticket, a ticket for another date or no ticket.
Tanger Med to Algeciras ferry timetable
Below you will see the real departures for the date you choose. It is the most frequent route across the Strait: there are ferries throughout the day, including in the early hours, every day of the year. Times are local time in each country; pay attention to the arrival time.
If you travel in high summer, during Operation Strait Crossing (Operación Paso del Estrecho, OPE; from 15 June to 15 September), car spaces sell out before passenger places.
For the outbound trip from Spain, see the Algeciras to Tanger Med ferry.

Who runs the Tanger Med to Algeciras ferry
It is the route with the most operators across the Strait: Baleària, DFDS (formerly FRS Iberia and DFDS; now also taking over the line of Naviera Armas (now operated by Baleària)) and AML (Africa Morocco Link). Baleària also runs Operation Strait Crossing with free changes up to 48 hours before on this line. For each departure, the search shows who runs it.
If you booked with Armas, your ticket is still valid: some changes may require a new booking in Baleària's system.
Tanger Med to Algeciras ferry price
The price above is the lowest recent one for an adult without a car. It depends on the ferry company, the date (the departure from Morocco to Europe at the end of summer is the busiest), the car, and whether it is one way or return.
If you buy in Morocco, Baleària also sells through its Moroccan website and at points of sale in Morocco; with ILF you pay in euros and receive the ferry company's booking reference.
Children, babies and discounts
Children and babies have their own fare: enter each traveller's age when you search. Resident and large family discounts are for Spanish domestic routes and do not apply on this international route. Minors need their own passport.

Ports of Tanger Med and Algeciras
Port of Tánger Med
How to get to the port of Tanger Med
Tanger Med is on the coast, about 40 km east of the city of Tangier, next to Ksar Sghir. You get there by motorway from Tangier and Tetouan. With a car, how early you need to arrive depends on the ferry company and on whether you are in the OPE: in the OPE, Baleària asks for about five hours at Tanger Med, well above the usual. Have your closed ticket and the car's documents to hand before entering the port area.
Arriving in Algeciras: the port and how to continue
You arrive at the Algeciras maritime terminal, next to the centre. On disembarking you go through Spanish passport control. With a car, you drive straight out onto the A-7 towards Málaga, Cádiz or Seville. On foot, the train station and the bus station are close to the port.
Documents: Moroccan passport, residence and dual nationality
The crossing is international: all passengers, including minors, need a valid passport. What else you need depends on your nationality.
If you have a Moroccan passport
- To enter Spain you need a Schengen visa or a valid residence permit from an EU country. A residence permit or a European visa does not on its own replace Morocco's entry requirements, which you can check on the official Accès Maroc portal.
- Before boarding, Baleària checks with the European platform that you have a valid visa or authorisation and may deny you access to the ship.
- When you enter Schengen, your personal data and biometrics are recorded (Entry/Exit System, EES).
If you have dual nationality
To enter Spain you can use your European passport. Which document Morocco asks of its nationals on leaving or entering does not appear in the ferry companies' data: ask the Moroccan consulate.
If you are Spanish or another European
When returning from Morocco you need the passport you entered with. The DNI is not valid for entering Morocco.
Minors
Minors need their own passport. If they are not travelling with both parents, the authorities may ask for travel authorisation, the family record book or a birth certificate.
