Tenerife to El Hierro Ferry: Timetables, Prices and Operators

With Fred Olsen

To get from Tenerife to El Hierro by ferry, you leave from the port of Los Cristianos, in the south of Tenerife, and arrive in Valverde. There are two ferry companies, Fred. Olsen Express and Baleària Canarias, with daily sailings.

No ship leaves for El Hierro from Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Anyone living in the north of Tenerife has to go to the south: both ferry companies have a Ferry Bus.

Residents of the Canary Islands get 75% off the passenger fare. You can travel with a car and with a dog.

Tenerife to El Hierro ferry timetable

Below you see the sailings for your date from both ferry companies. If you are coming by plane or from the north of the island, start from the ship's time and work backwards: it is more than two hours at sea and the port is far from Santa Cruz.

For the return, see the page for the Valverde Tenerife ferry and the one for the Valverde Los Cristianos ferry.

There are no departures scheduled on this route in the coming days. You can travel on these routes:

Indicative schedules and subject to variation by the ferry company for operational reasons without prior notice.

How long does the ferry from Tenerife to El Hierro take?

More than two hours by fast ferry, the longest crossing of those leaving from Los Cristianos. The timetable for your date gives the duration of each sailing.

The route is run by two ferry companies, Fred. Olsen Express and Baleària Canarias, both with a direct fast ferry and both with daily sailings. Fred. Olsen lists Los Cristianos–Valverde on its website; Baleària has it as Los Cristianos–Valverde (La Estaca).

What sets them apart in practice:

  • Fred. Olsen: tickets (except promotional ones) are valid for a year and allow changes of date, time and route; it has Gold Class with priority boarding and the Plus points card.
  • Baleària: lets you add a car, motorbike, van, caravan and bicycle, and has a Club with points. Its resident bonus does not cover the car, the pet or extras either.

They are two different companies with different conditions: check which is the sailing on your date in the timetable before buying.

Tenerife to El Hierro ferry price

The price you see above is the lowest recently found for a non-resident adult without a vehicle. It is the longest crossing leaving from Los Cristianos, and the ferry company, the fare and whether you take a car usually weigh more than the date.

If you are a resident, calculate your price on I Love Ferry (iloveferry.com/ferris) by switching on «Resident in the Canary Islands?».

Canary Islands resident discount between Tenerife and El Hierro

Residents of the Canary Islands get 75% off the passenger fare with both ferry companies, and it does not apply to the car, the pet or extras, so the real saving is not exactly 75% of the total.

You can calculate your resident price directly on I Love Ferry, at iloveferry.com/ferris, by switching on «Resident in the Canary Islands?» in the results search; the 75% applies only to the passenger fare.

Fred. Olsen checks residence online (SARA) and, if it is not verified, asks for the certificate of residence from the town council. Baleària asks for proof of residence and a DNI. More in Canary Islands resident discount.

Large family discount

Large family: 20% for the general category and 50% for the special one on the passenger ticket, which can be combined with the resident discount on both ferry companies. You need a valid card and, with Fred. Olsen, to validate it before travelling. More in ferry with large family discount.

Tenerife to El Hierro ferry with a car

Both ferry companies carry cars, motorbikes, vans and bicycles. The vehicle is declared when booking and added to the driver's ticket; the resident discount does not apply to it.

If you are staying only a few days, consider renting a car in El Hierro instead of taking your own: check first with the rental company whether it lets you take it on board.

Tenerife to El Hierro ferry with a dog

You can travel with a dog, with its own ticket and limited places.

Fred. Olsen has Pet Carrier (carrier), Pet Room (a kennel with a camera on deck) and Pet Sofa (loose on a lead next to the seat); Baleària offers Pet&You (a mat next to your seat), Pet Friendly seat in a carrier and calm kennels. What is available on your sailing depends on the ship. More in travelling by ferry with a dog.

Ports of Tenerife (Los Cristianos) and El Hierro (Valverde)

Port of El Hierro

Port of El Hierro

The port of La Estaca is located in the north of the island of El Hierro, near the municipality of Valverde. It is a port that mixes sports docks (it has more than 120 berths) with commercial passenger and car traffic with the island of Tenerife. Next to

Why the ferry to El Hierro leaves from Los Cristianos and not from Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the north, has the ships to Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Cádiz. The south, Los Cristianos, has those to La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. That is the cause of the most common doubt: going to the wrong port.

Between the two there is a Ferry Bus, of about an hour, for foot passengers, without pets. With Fred. Olsen you have to add it when you buy and places are limited.

Arriving in El Hierro

The ferry arrives at La Estaca, the port of Valverde. Do not expect much public transport there: your own car, a rental or a taxi.

How to get to Los Cristianos and get around El Hierro

Los Cristianos is on the TF-1, near Tenerife South airport. From the north, allow a good hour by road. In El Hierro, a rental car is the most practical.

Documents for travelling from Tenerife to El Hierro

It is a route between islands of the same country: to board, a valid identity document (DNI, NIE or passport) is enough. Both Fred. Olsen and Baleària work without paper tickets, and the digital DNI is only valid if you show it from the official app, not with a screenshot.

If you have a resident or large family discount, also bring the document that proves it. With a car, the person driving the vehicle must be the one named on the booking. With a pet, bring the microchip and its documents (with Baleària, the valid health record).

I Love Ferry tips for travelling from Tenerife to El Hierro

  • If you are in Santa Cruz or the north, work out the transfer to the south. The Ferry Bus exists, but it has limited places and does not accept pets.

  • The sea rules: timetables can change because of the weather. Enter a valid mobile number and email.
