Tunis to Civitavecchia Ferry: Departure from La Goulette, Car and Papers

With Grimaldi Lines

To get from Tunis to Rome by ferry, you leave from La Goulette and arrive at Civitavecchia. GNV sails all year round, and Grimaldi Lines also runs the route. With GNV the ship calls at Palermo, and the return takes longer than the outward trip.

GNV check-in at La Goulette opens eight hours before departure and closes three hours before. With a car, arrive early: there are police, customs and a check of the vehicle registration document.

If you are Tunisian, GNV asks for a Schengen visa to board for Italy, with some exceptions; residents in Europe carry their valid residence permit. If you travel on a Spanish passport, bring your passport too.

Tunis to Civitavecchia ferry timetable

The timetable shows the departures for the date you choose. GNV sails all year round, and Grimaldi has one weekly service each way, with a published calendar and periods that change. There is no daily departure: if you are heading back after the holidays, check the date first and the rest afterwards.

The return takes longer

GNV gives a longer duration for the Tunis–Civitavecchia direction than for the opposite one, because of the call at Palermo. This matters if you are connecting with a train or going to work the next day: allow plenty of margin.

Outward trip

To go to Tunis, see the Civitavecchia to Tunis ferry page.

How long does the ferry from Tunis to Civitavecchia take?

More than a day. With GNV, the return is somewhat longer than the outward trip because of the call at Palermo. The timetable shows the duration of each departure. Expect to board in the afternoon and disembark at Civitavecchia almost on another day; if you are connecting with the train to Rome or driving north, check the arrival time before booking.

In this direction the route is run by:

  • GNV: departures all year round from La Goulette, with pet-friendly cabins, halal menus and prayer rooms. For the Tunis–Civitavecchia direction, its website shows a call at Palermo.
  • Grimaldi Lines: also runs the Civitavecchia–Tunis line, with one weekly service each way depending on the period. It asks you to report four hours before departure and to have the exact ticket details.

Tunis to Civitavecchia ferry price

The price you see above is the lowest we have found for one adult without a car. The amount depends on:

  • The date: the return to Europe at the end of summer concentrates demand.
  • The accommodation: seat or cabin; on a crossing of more than a day, a cabin is almost always the best choice.
  • The vehicle: paid separately; give its type, make and model.
  • The fare: GNV mentions discounts for returning Tunisian residents and promotions on certain dates.

Children, Tunisian minors and discounts on Tunis to Civitavecchia

As this is an international route, there is no resident or large family discount. GNV publishes a fare for residents and locals without detailing it, and mentions discounts for returning Tunisian residents. Children and babies have their own fare: give the age of each passenger when you search.

Minors of Tunisian nationality cannot leave Tunisia without the express authorisation of the Tunisian parent (Spanish Foreign Ministry): bring it printed out.

Tunis to Civitavecchia ferry with a car

With a car, on leaving Tunisia you are asked for the vehicle registration document you were given on entry (valid three months, according to the Foreign Ministry). The car must leave the country with the person who brought it in: otherwise you may have a customs problem. It does not go through your hands at Civitavecchia: the check is at La Goulette.

  • Original vehicle registration document, valid insurance and driving licence.
  • Passports for everyone in the car.
  • With Grimaldi, prior registration on Smart Traveller.

If you are a TRE (Tunisian resident abroad) and have made a permanent or temporary import, the official portal idaraty.tn has a service, Wadh3iati, to check the customs status of the vehicle; it is worth looking at before you travel. This information comes from a search summary, we have not been able to read the page: please confirm it.

Tunis to Civitavecchia ferry with a dog

In a cabin, GNV has "Four-legged friends cabins" (Cabinas Amigos de cuatro patas), with linoleum floors and daily disinfection, and lets you leave them late shortly before docking. Bring a lead, muzzle, carrier and food. To return to the EU from Tunisia, a third country, you need a microchip, a rabies vaccination given after the chip and the original health certificate from the country of origin, and in some cases an antibody titration test. This rule comes from a French note; for Spain, check with the Ministry of Agriculture. More information in travelling by ferry with a dog.

On board: cabin, halal food and pets

On this long crossing, book a cabin if you can. GNV offers cabins of several types, with a Cabin Plus option, halal menus and prayer rooms. The car decks are closed during the crossing: take up to the cabin whatever you need, including medicines and the car papers.
