Valverde to Tenerife Ferry: Timetables, Operators and Ports

With Fred Olsen

To go from Valverde (El Hierro) to Tenerife by ferry you leave from the port of La Estaca and arrive at Los Cristianos, in the south of Tenerife. It is run by Fred. Olsen Express and Baleària Canarias, with daily sailings.

No ferry from El Hierro reaches Santa Cruz de Tenerife. If your destination is the north or the capital, you have an hour on the road along the TF-1 or the ferry company's Ferry Bus.

Canary Islands residents get a 75% discount on the passenger fare.

Valverde Tenerife ferry timetable

Below you can see the departures for your date from both ferry companies. To plan the day, count the journey of over two hours plus the transfer from Los Cristianos to wherever you are going in Tenerife.

From Tenerife to El Hierro

For the outward journey, see the page for the Tenerife El Hierro ferry.

There are no departures scheduled on this route in the coming days. You can travel on these routes:

Indicative schedules and subject to variation by the ferry company for operational reasons without prior notice.

How long does the ferry from El Hierro to Tenerife take?

Over two hours by fast ferry. The exact duration of each departure is in the timetable.

The route is run by two ferry companies, Fred. Olsen Express and Baleària Canarias, both with a direct fast ferry and both with daily sailings. Fred. Olsen lists Los Cristianos–Valverde on its website; Baleària has it as Los Cristianos–Valverde (La Estaca).

What sets them apart in practice:

  • Fred. Olsen: tickets (except promotional ones) are valid for a year and allow changes of date, time and route; it has Gold Class with priority boarding and the Plus points card.
  • Baleària: lets you add a car, motorbike, van, caravan and bicycle, and has Club with points. Its resident discount does not cover the car, the pet or extras either.

They are two different companies with different conditions: check which one runs the departure on your date in the timetable before buying.

Valverde Tenerife ferry price

The price you see above is the lowest recently found for a non-resident adult without a vehicle. If you then have to go to Santa Cruz, add the Ferry Bus or the cost of going by road: it is not in the ferry price.

Canary Islands resident discount from El Hierro to Tenerife

Canary Islands residents get a 75% discount on the passenger fare with both ferry companies, and it does not apply to the car, the pet or extras, so the real saving is not exactly 75% of the total.

You can work out your resident price directly on I Love Ferry, at iloveferry.com/ferris, by switching on "Resident in the Canary Islands?" in the results search; the 75% applies only to the passenger fare.

Fred. Olsen checks residence electronically (SARA) and, if it does not come up as verified, asks for the certificate of residence from the town hall. Baleària asks for proof of residence and your DNI. More in Canary Islands resident discount.

Large family discount

Large family: 20% for the general category and 50% for the special one on the passenger ticket, which can be combined with the resident discount on both ferry companies. You need a certificate in date and, with Fred. Olsen, you must validate it before travelling. More in ferry with large family discount.

Valverde Tenerife ferry with a car

Both ferry companies carry cars, motorbikes, vans and bicycles. You declare the vehicle when booking and it has no resident discount. Arriving by car in Los Cristianos, you have the TF-1 on your doorstep.

Valverde Tenerife ferry with a dog

You can travel with a dog, with a separate ticket and limited places. If you then go to Santa Cruz, the Ferry Bus does not accept pets: you will have to go by car or taxi.

Fred. Olsen has Pet Carrier (carrier), Pet Room (kennel with camera on deck) and Pet Sofa (loose on a lead next to the seat); Baleària offers Pet&You (mat next to your seat), a pet friendly seat in a carrier and calm kennels. What is available on your sailing depends on the ship. More in travelling by ferry with a dog.

Ports of El Hierro (Valverde) and Tenerife (Los Cristianos)

Port of El Hierro

Port of El Hierro

The port of La Estaca is located in the north of the island of El Hierro, near the municipality of Valverde. It is a port that mixes sports docks (it has more than 120 berths) with commercial passenger and car traffic with the island of Tenerife. Next to

Port of La Estaca (Valverde)

El Hierro's port is La Estaca, next to Valverde. It is the island's only passenger port for both ferry companies: do not look for sailings from La Restinga or any other port on El Hierro.

Los Cristianos or Santa Cruz? Which port in Tenerife

The ferry from El Hierro arrives at Los Cristianos, in the south, close to Tenerife South airport. Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the north, has the ferries to Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Cádiz, not to El Hierro.

Between the two there is a Ferry Bus from both ferry companies, of about an hour: it is for foot passengers, does not accept pets and, with Fred. Olsen, you have to add it when buying, with limited places.

Getting around Tenerife on arrival

From Los Cristianos you take the TF-1 north and to Tenerife South airport, which is close. If you prefer not to drive, use the ferry company's Ferry Bus to Santa Cruz.

Documents for the Valverde Tenerife ferry

It is a route between islands of the same country: a valid identity document (DNI, NIE or passport) is enough to board. Both Fred. Olsen and Baleària work without printed paper, and the digital DNI is only valid if you show it from the official app, not with a screenshot.

If you have a resident or large family discount, also bring the document that proves it. With a car, the person driving the vehicle must be the one named on the booking. With a pet, bring the microchip and its documents (with Baleària, the current health record booklet).

I Love Ferry tips for going from El Hierro to Tenerife

  • Plan your real destination in Tenerife. If it is the north, allow for the transfer from Los Cristianos.
  • Do not cut flights fine. If you arrive by ferry and fly out the same day, leave a large margin: there is no guaranteed connection.
  • If they cancel because of the weather, Fred. Olsen's normal tickets can be changed for a year; Baleària may change the time or ship with no compensation for weather.
  • Take with you what you need: you cannot get to the car during the crossing.
  • Resident: the discount covers only the passenger fare, not the car.
