Barcelona to Formentera Ferry: Trip with a Stop in Ibiza
With Balearia, Trasmed · 6 to 7 weekly departures · 11:30 hours
There is no direct ship from Barcelona to Formentera: the ferry journey goes through Ibiza. First you take the overnight crossing Barcelona to Ibiza, then a short ferry leg to La Savina, the only port in Formentera.
Baleària includes Formentera among its destinations from Barcelona. If you book on your own, the first leg is run by Baleària or Trasmed and the second by Baleària or Trasmapi.
If you take a car, in summer you need a Formentera permit and, in transit through Ibiza, a separate procedure with no fee.
Residents of the Balearic Islands get a 75% discount on the passenger fare, but not on the car.

Barcelona to Formentera ferry with a car
Taking a car to Formentera from Barcelona means going through two different regulations in summer:
- Formentera: from 1 June to 30 September, vehicle entry is limited and you need a permit at formentera.eco.
- Ibiza: if the car passes through Ibiza on those dates, transit to or from Formentera has its own procedure at ibizacircular.es, with no fee.
The simplest alternative is to leave the car on the mainland and hire one in Formentera: there are rental companies at La Savina. With Baleària you can book the rental together with the ferry, for the day of arrival.
If you take a car, on the Ibiza to Formentera leg Baleària asks you to arrive at least 30 minutes before. Motorbikes up to 125 cc board free on Ibiza to Formentera, and you must say so when you book.
Barcelona to Formentera ferry with a dog
Each leg has its own rules. On the overnight ferry, Baleària offers pet-friendly seats and cabins and calm kennels; Trasmed accepts pets in an adapted cabin, a seat (under 8 kg, in a carrier) or kennels. On the Ibiza to Formentera leg, Trasmapi accepts pets on a lead or in a carrier, with a microchip and vaccinations. It can never stay in the car. More in travelling by ferry with a dog.

Baleària boards foot passengers at the North Terminal, next to the World Trade Center, and cars for Formentera use an adjoining quay that is confirmed hours beforehand. Trasmed boards at the San Beltrán quay. There are metro, taxi and shuttle bus options. With a car, check the Low Emission Zone.
Arriving in La Savina, the only port in Formentera

Changing ships in Ibiza
The ship from Barcelona arrives in Ibiza and the one to Formentera leaves from the port of Ibiza town. Check your ticket for the quay of each ship: it is not always the same. Leave time between arrivals and departures, especially with a car, and do not count on a ship waiting for you. If you are on foot, Baleària asks you to arrive 15 minutes before on Ibiza to Formentera.
Documents for boarding
Domestic route: valid ID card, NIE or passport. With a discount, a residence certificate or large family certificate. With a car, the vehicle registration document and insurance, and the Formentera and Ibiza authorisations, if you need them.
