Barcelona to Ibiza Ferry: Overnight, Car and Summer Permit

Barcelona to Ibiza Ferry: Overnight, Car and Summer Permit

With Balearia, Trasmed · 16 to 21 weekly departures · 9:00 hours - 14:00 hours

The Barcelona to Ibiza ferry is run by Baleària and Trasmed. It leaves the port of Barcelona and arrives at the Botafoc quay, in Ibiza town. It is an overnight crossing with a cabin and there is no fast ferry.

If you are taking a car and you are not a resident, from 1 June to 30 September you need a permit from the Consell d'Eivissa. With a return ticket with the same ferry company, the ferry company arranges it for you.

If you are looking for a shorter crossing to Ibiza, see Valencia to Ibiza or Denia to Ibiza.

Residents of the Balearic Islands get a 75% discount on the passenger fare, not on the car.

Barcelona to Ibiza ferry timetable

Below you can see the departures for the date you choose. All of them are overnight: you leave Barcelona at night and arrive in Ibiza in the morning. Baleària and Trasmed do not sail every day, especially outside the summer, and in July and August extra sailings are usually added.

So that you do not have to leave your cabin in the small hours, Baleària offers late disembarkation on this route, at an additional cost. Check the arrival time of your departure: it can still be early to check in at your hotel.

How long does the ferry from Barcelona to Ibiza take?

It is a crossing of several hours made overnight, which is why almost all travellers book a cabin. There is no direct fast ferry between Barcelona and Ibiza. If you want to cut the time on the ship, the alternative is Valencia or Denia, where the crossing is shorter.

  • Baleària: late disembarkation in a cabin, pet friendly seats and cabins, and calm kennels for pets. Cars board at the adjoining quay, and foot passengers at the North Terminal.
  • Trasmed GLE (Grimaldi group): conventional overnight ferries from the San Beltrán quay, luggage with no weight limit and a discount for residents of the Balearic Islands.

Baleària and Trasmed do not share a terminal in Barcelona. Check yours on your ticket.

Barcelona to Ibiza ferry price

The price shown above is the lowest recent fare for an adult without a car, with its date. Because the crossing is overnight, the total depends a lot on whether you choose a seat or a cabin and whether you take a car. The price goes up in July, August and at weekends.

  • With Baleària, the Mini fare cannot be cancelled and the Reducida fare can, depending on how many days are left.
  • With Trasmed, changing your ticket once you are at the port costs extra.

Compare the outbound and return separately, but bear in mind the car permit if you travel in summer: if you use different ferry companies for the outbound and return, you arrange it yourself.

Balearic resident discount

If you live in the Balearic Islands you get a resident discount on the passenger ticket (according to each ferry company's resident fare; check in the search) with Baleària and with Trasmed. It does not apply to the car or the pet.

  • Say you are a resident in the search on iloveferry.com/ferris.
  • Take your DNI or NIE and your certificate of residence.
  • If someone on the booking is not a resident, make separate bookings.
  • Cars registered in Ibiza do not need the summer permit. Those from Mallorca and Menorca are outside the quota and pay no fee, but Baleària says you must prove it at ibizacircular.es.
  • More at Balearic resident discount.

Large family discount

20% in the general category and 50% in the special category on the passenger fare, with a valid Spanish large family card, on domestic routes. It does not apply to the car. Trasmed mentions it in its listing. More at ferry large family discount.

Barcelona to Ibiza ferry with a car

Baleària and Trasmed carry cars, motorbikes, vans and motorhomes. Enter the make, model and dimensions when you book: the price and boarding depend on them.

Car permit for Ibiza in summer

From 1 June to 30 September, the Consell d'Eivissa limits the entry of cars with a daily quota. How you arrange it depends on your ticket:

  • Return with the same ferry company: the ferry company arranges the permit. Baleària does it automatically and, if there is a fee, pays it.
  • One way only, or return with different ferry companies: you arrange it yourself for the rest of the stay at ibizacircular.es, the Consell's official website.
  • Motorbikes and mopeds: no paperwork needed.

Control is by number plate reading: enter the plate correctly in the booking and in the paperwork. Driving without a permit is fined. The days of arrival and departure do not count towards the period.

How early to arrive

Baleària asks you to arrive at least 90 minutes early with a car; in Barcelona, cars for Ibiza board at an adjoining quay, different from the North Terminal, and the location is confirmed hours before. Trasmed says to arrive 60 minutes early with a vehicle and 30 on foot. The port of Barcelona is a Low Emission Zone: check your environmental label.

Barcelona to Ibiza ferry with a dog

  • Baleària: pet friendly seat (up to 8 kg in a carrier, on certain ships), pet friendly cabin (one animal, or two if together they do not exceed 30 kg) and calm kennel, with the animal alone on deck or in the garage.
  • Trasmed: adapted cabins, seat (under 8 kg, in a carrier) and kennels.

On a night at sea, the pet friendly cabin is the most comfortable option if your dog is big. It can never stay in the car. More at travelling by ferry with a dog.

Ports of Barcelona and Ibiza

Getting to the port of Barcelona

Baleària boards at the North Terminal, next to the World Trade Center, and Trasmed at the San Beltrán quay. There is a metro, taxis and a port shuttle bus. If you are driving, check the low emission zone. The exact terminal is on your ticket.

Arriving in Ibiza: the Botafoc quay

The ferry arrives at the Botafoc quay, in the port of Ibiza town, about 20 minutes' walk from the centre. There is a bus and taxis, and free parking in front of the maritime station. Dalt Vila and the centre are close; to get to other parts of the island, a car is the most practical.

Documents for boarding

Domestic route: a valid DNI, NIE or passport. With a discount, a certificate of residence or large family card. With a car, the vehicle registration document and insurance, and the plate on the ticket must be the car's, because Ibiza checks number plates.

I Love Ferry tips for Barcelona to Ibiza

  1. Return with the same ferry company. If you take a car in summer, this way the ferry company arranges the permit for you.
  2. Book a cabin. It is a night at sea.
  3. Always write the plate correctly. Ibiza checks entries by number plate and you can correct it in "My bookings" if the make and model do not change.
  4. Get your car to the port in good time. The terminal and quay change depending on the ship; check the ferry company's notice.
  5. No car in Ibiza. If you are only going for a few days, rent one there and you avoid the permit.
