Civitavecchia to Tunis Ferry: GNV and Grimaldi, Stopover and Documents
With Grimaldi Lines
To get from Rome to Tunis by ferry, you leave from Civitavecchia and arrive at the port of La Goulette. GNV runs it all year and Grimaldi is also listed on the route. It is a long crossing with a car, motorbike, motorhome and pet.
According to GNV, the ship normally stops in Palermo, so it is not a direct crossing. There is a non-stop service only in high season, according to a source we still have to confirm. Always check the duration of your sailing.
Tunisia is not in the EU: you need a passport valid for at least three months. The Spanish DNI is not accepted. Tunisian residents in Europe, the TRE, have their own regime for the car and for the ticket.
Civitavecchia to Tunis ferry timetable
In the timetable you see the departures for the date you choose. GNV runs all year, with day and night sailings, and Grimaldi has a weekly service in each direction, with a published calendar and periods that change. It is not a line with daily sailings: travellers who book in a hurry often miss the day they wanted.
Stopover in Palermo
GNV's website says the route calls at Palermo in both directions. That makes the journey considerably longer than a direct crossing. Check the duration of each sailing before booking, especially if you are connecting with a train or an appointment in Tunis.
Return
For the return, see the Tunis to Civitavecchia ferry page.
Check the departures for your date in our search engine. Schedules and prices
Indicative schedules and subject to variation by the ferry company for operational reasons without prior notice.
How long does the ferry from Civitavecchia to Tunis take?
More than a day, because of the stopover in Palermo. In the timetable you see the duration of each sailing, and you will notice they are not all the same: GNV's outward and return trips do not take the same time. Plan for one or two nights on board, and take to the cabin what you need: the car decks are closed during the crossing.
Who runs the Civitavecchia to Tunis ferry: GNV and Grimaldi
Two Italian ferry companies operate it:
- GNV: with sailings all year, by day and by night. It offers pet-friendly cabins, halal menus and prayer rooms on board, and its loyalty programme myGNV Club.
- Grimaldi Lines: it also has the Civitavecchia–Tunis route, with a weekly service in each direction depending on the period. To take a car, it asks you to register beforehand on its Smart Traveller platform and bring the QR code to La Goulette.
Both arrive at La Goulette, the port of Tunis. Choose by departure day, accommodation and pet policy rather than by ferry company.
Civitavecchia to Tunis ferry price
The price you see above is the lowest we have found for an adult without a car. On this route the main factors are:
- The time of year: the summer high season and the return of Tunisians living in Europe concentrate demand.
- The accommodation: on a crossing of more than a day a cabin almost always pays off. GNV sells cabins with added services.
- The vehicle: it is paid separately; say the type, make and model when you search.
- The fare: look for the one that fits your situation (family, Tunisian resident in Europe); each ferry company's discounts appear in the search engine.
Children, TRE and discounts on Civitavecchia to Tunis
As it is an international route, there is no Spanish resident discount or large family discount. GNV publishes a fare for residents and locals and mentions discounts for returning Tunisian residents and Ramadan promotions, but does not detail the conditions on its website: confirm them when you search. Children and babies have their own fare: say the age of each passenger.
Minors with Tunisian nationality cannot leave Tunisia without the express authorisation of the Tunisian parent, according to the Spanish Foreign Ministry (Exteriores).
Civitavecchia to Tunis ferry with a car
With a car, expect customs formalities on arrival. To travel you need:
- Original vehicle registration document and valid insurance (Green Card with Tunisia included); GNV asks for it at boarding.
- Driving licence and passport for all occupants.
- With Grimaldi, prior registration on Smart Traveller to obtain the arrival QR.
According to Exteriores, to enter with a foreign vehicle a vehicle registration document valid for three months is issued in Tunisia, and it is reclaimed on departure. Tourists cannot sell the car and the dinar cannot be taken out of the country. Vans with a roof rack: Grimaldi does not allow luggage on the roof to Tunis.
Civitavecchia to Tunis ferry with a dog
GNV has "Four-legged Friends Cabins", with linoleum floors and daily disinfection, late cabin check-out until a few minutes before docking and an outdoor walking area. Bring a lead, muzzle, carrier and food. Grimaldi accepts pets with a specific cabin service if you add it to the ticket. The papers Tunisia requires to enter with a pet are not published by GNV or Exteriores: check with the Tunisian embassy beforehand. More information in travelling by ferry with a dog.
On board: cabins, halal food and pets
GNV offers halal menus and prayer rooms on board, something Tunisian travellers value and which you do not find on every line. There are cabins of several types, with the Cabin Plus option, and seats. On a crossing of more than a day, book a cabin if you can and carry cash in euros declared at customs; Exteriores points out that euros must be declared if they exceed the equivalent of 5,000 dinars.
Ports of Civitavecchia (Rome) and Tunis (La Goulette)
Port of Túnez
How to get to the port of Civitavecchia
Civitavecchia is on the coast, about 80 km from Rome. GNV boards for Tunis at the Autostrade del Mare Terminal (T1), on Via degli Aurunci, through Gate V. The route's web page mentions "Stazione Marittima Calata Laurenti": terminal names do not match across its pages, so confirm on your boarding card.
GNV asks you to arrive five hours ahead with a vehicle and four hours ahead without one; check-in closes one hour before departure. Grimaldi asks for four hours' notice with or without a vehicle. Do not arrive at the last minute: with customs involved, queues get longer.
Arriving at La Goulette: how to get to Tunis city
The port of Tunis is La Goulette, about 10 km from the centre. The terminal has parking nearby and is reached by the RN9 road or the P1. The TGM train goes as far as the "La Goulette Port" stop. GNV has an office on Avenue Habib Bourguiba. With a car, expect police and customs on arrival: it is the slowest part of the journey.
Documents for travelling to Tunis by ferry
- Passport valid for at least three months from the planned date of departure from Tunisia. The DNI is not accepted for Spaniards or for EU citizens. No visa for stays of up to 90 days.
- All passengers, minors and babies included, with an original document.
- If you do not live in Tunisia, on arrival by sea you may be asked for a paid accommodation booking and a return ticket; bring both printed.
- GNV warns that on its routes to Tunis there are EES entry and exit checks: allow more time at the port.
- Tunisians and TRE: to enter Tunisia, a Tunisian passport (the official Tunisian source has not been read). To board for Italy, GNV says Tunisians need a Schengen visa except in certain cases; bring a valid residence permit.
I Love Ferry tips for the Civitavecchia to Tunis ferry
- Check whether your sailing has a stopover: the timetable shows the duration; a shorter journey is usually a ship with no stop.
- Bring all your documents on paper: passport, insurance, Green Card and the hotel booking in case they ask for it.
- Arrive at the port well ahead of time: with a car, GNV asks for five hours, and customs delay boarding.
- With Grimaldi, register the car before you leave on Smart Traveller to have the QR on arrival.
- If you are a TRE, keep the car's papers before deciding which customs regime you apply: it is a procedure done in Tunisia, not at the port in Italy.
