How timetables change throughout the year

The timetables on this route follow two rhythms. From November to May there is one sailing a day in the afternoon, at 17:00, which reaches Ibiza at dinner time. At Christmas the time changes: on 24 and 31 December the ship leaves at 15:00, so you arrive in Ibiza in time for dinner. In summer Baleària adds morning and midday sailings, and on the busiest days there are up to four in each direction. The early one, at around 08:00, is the one used by people spending the day in Ibiza and by those who want to make the most of the afternoon at the beach.

The return from Ibiza to Denia follows the same pattern: in winter it leaves in the morning, and in summer there are also afternoon and evening sailings. If you are going and coming back within a few days, check both dates at once in our search: you will see on a single screen which combination suits you best.

Baleària publishes its timetables by season and may change them at short notice: because of works in the port, sea conditions or a change of ship on the route. Booking the outbound and return together has two advantages on this route. The first is that you see the total price of the trip in a single search and compare timetables in both directions. The actual time may vary with sea conditions and wind strength. It is 124.1 km (64 nautical miles) from the Baleària terminal in Denia to the Botafoc quay.

Yes, there is a fast ferry from Denia to Ibiza. It is the most sought-after ship on the route, because in a little over two hours it puts you in the port of Ibiza. Baleària's fast ferries on this line, such as the Eleanor Roosevelt or the Ramón Llull, are fast aluminium-hulled ships with numbered seats, a cafeteria and space for cars in the hold. There is not a fast ferry every day of the year: in winter the 17:00 sailing may be made by a fast or a conventional ship, depending on the shipping company's calendar. What makes the crossing longer or shorter

The duration you see on your ticket is the expected one. The actual time depends on three things:

• The ship. The direct fast ferry takes about 2 h 15 min; the conventional ferry, about 3 hours.
• The stop. Some sailings call at Formentera, and the trip goes up to about 3 h 30 min.
• The sea. With a strong easterly or westerly wind, the ship slows down and arrival is delayed by 15 to 45 minutes. If the storm is severe, the shipping company may move the sailing to another ship or another time.

To work out what time you will be at your hotel, add to the arrival time about 20 minutes to disembark on foot and up to 30 minutes with a car, because vehicles leave the hold in order.

The Denia to Ibiza route month by month

This guide helps you choose a date. The weather figures are indicative averages; the sailings come from Baleària's timetables.

January and February. This is the quietest time on the route. There is one sailing a day, in the afternoon, and there are almost always places left, for cars too. The Mediterranean is cold (about 14 °C) and on some stormy days the sailing may be delayed or changed. It is a good time to get to know the Ibiza of the locals: villages without queues, almond trees in blossom in late January and February in the Santa Agnès valley, and very low accommodation prices.

March. Residents visiting family and the first tourists start to travel. The Fallas in Valencia fill some sailings of people travelling from the island to the mainland. There are still places almost every day.

April. Easter arrives, the first peak of the year. Book two or three weeks ahead if you are travelling with a car on those days. Outside Easter, April is an excellent month for walking around the island and for the coves, although the water is still cool.

May. Almost all the hotels, restaurants and beach clubs open, and the island gets ready for summer. A very good month to go without crowds and with good weather, at still low-season prices.

June. The vehicle entry charge starts (1 June) and demand and prices go up. The nights of San Juan (23 and 24 June) are celebrated all over the island. If you take a car, book a return so that the shipping company handles the charge.

July and August. High season. More sailings a day, but also more people: car places are the first to sell out, especially on outbound Fridays and return Sundays. The water is at about 25-26 °C and the sea is usually calm. Book one or two months ahead, and earlier still for the week of 15 August.

September. For many, the best month to go to Ibiza: the water is warm, there are fewer people than in August and prices gradually come down. The summer sailings continue for much of the month.

October. The big clubs close with their closing parties and the island regains its calm. The weather is still good for the beach. The day trip is still available in October, at low-season prices.

November and December. The winter timetable returns, with the 17:00 sailing. Over the Constitution Day long weekend and at Christmas many island families travel: if you go on those days, book early. On 24 and 31 December the sailing moves forward to 15:00.

Denia to Ibiza ferry prices

Denia to Ibiza ferry tickets cost between €40 and €65 per crossing. The final price depends on the time of year (winter or summer), the accommodation (Sirena, Neptuno or VIP) and whether you travel with or without a car. As there is only one shipping company on this route, the price is set by Baleària. The cheapest option will depend on:

• how far ahead you book;
• the date you want to travel;
• the offers available at the time;
• the discounts you are entitled to;
• the places left when you book.

Resident: the 75% is deducted from each passenger's ticket, not from the vehicle.

How much it costs to take your car on the Denia to Ibiza ferry

It is one of the questions most asked on Google. With I Love Ferry, a driver with a standard car pays from €120 one way, and a family of four with a car, from around €220. What changes the car price most is the date: a Friday in August can cost double a Tuesday in May. Size also counts: a van or a car with a trailer pays more than a regular car, and a motorbike quite a lot less. How to make the most of your day in Ibiza

With the early sailing you reach Ibiza at around 10:00 and have almost the whole day ahead of you, until the return in the afternoon. We suggest three plans, depending on how you travel:

On foot, Ibiza town. From the Botafoc quay, you can reach the centre in a few minutes by taxi or bus. Go up to Dalt Vila, the walled old town and a World Heritage Site: enter through the Portal de ses Taules, walk the streets up to the cathedral and come down through the Marina district, the fishermen's quarter, full of shops and terraces. In the afternoon, a swim at Talamanca beach, a few minutes from the port, and back to the ship.

By car, the coves. The day trip with a car is an offer that is not always available, but when it appears it is the best way to see the island in a day. In half an hour you are at the beaches of Ses Salines, in the south, or at Cala Llonga and Santa Eulària, in the east. Leave the port as soon as you disembark and come back with an hour to spare.

As a family, beach and a stroll. With children, the most comfortable option is to stay close: Talamanca for a swim, lunch at the port and a walk around Dalt Vila at sunset, when the heat eases.

Remember: if the return ship leaves at a specific time, arrive at the Botafoc terminal at least 45 minutes before on foot, and 90 minutes before with a car.

The ships from Denia to Ibiza have holds for almost any vehicle. With Baleària you can take a car, motorbike, bicycle, van, caravan, motorhome and also your electric scooter.

Boarding with a car in Denia, step by step

1. Arrive 90 minutes early at the vehicle boarding area of the Baleària terminal. In summer, a little earlier is better.
2. Have your ticket and ID to hand for all passengers. At the access control they ask for your boarding pass, printed or on your phone.
3. Wait in the lane you are shown. The port staff organise the lines by size and destination.
4. Enter the hold slowly and park where they direct you. Apply the handbrake, leave the car in gear and switch off the engine and the alarm.
5. Go up with what you need for the trip. During the crossing you cannot go down to the hold. Take water, a jacket and the children's things.
6. When you arrive in Ibiza, wait for the announcement over the speakers to go down to the car. Cars leave the hold in order.

Only the driver enters the port with the car; passengers may also do so, depending on the port, or board on foot. If you travel with a caravan, motorhome or trailer, give the exact measurements when booking: the price and the space in the hold depend on them.

Is it worth taking your car to Ibiza?

It depends on the trip. For a week in a house or in an inland village, taking the car usually works out cheaper than renting one on the island in summer, and you travel with as much luggage as you like. For a short break in Ibiza town or San Antonio, on the other hand, you can get around well by bus, taxi or rented motorbike. Also bear in mind the vehicle charge from 1 June to 30 September, which is handled automatically if you book a return.

In each passenger's details, enter the DNI or NIE: the shipping company checks residency in the Ministry's system, and if everything is in order, the 75% is applied automatically. • Choose the sailing with them in mind. The early summer one arrives mid-morning and leaves the whole day on the island; the 17:00 one, in winter, arrives at dinner time.
• Bring the pushchair. It travels free, and on board there are lifts between the decks.
• Bring something to keep them entertained. Two and a quarter hours pass quickly with a story, a tablet or some time in the play area.
• If someone feels seasick, sit in the middle of the ship, on the lowest deck, and look at the horizon. Eat something light before boarding.
• Documents for minors. Spanish children travel with their DNI or the family book; minors travelling without their parents need authorisation.

Baleària accepts dogs, cats and other pets on the ships from Denia to Ibiza. Passengers with animals board and disembark last, for safety. On this route there are no cabins, so you have two options:

• Carrier: your pet travels with you in a carrier of 60 x 40 x 30 cm at most.
• Calm huts (casitas de calma): an equipped area of the ship, with ventilation and space to walk your dog.

Requirements: health documents in order, vaccinations, microchip, and a lead or harness when boarding and disembarking. Pay for your pet's ticket when you book. A dog can never be left in the car.

With your dog in Ibiza

Ibiza has beaches where dogs are allowed, such as Es Faralló, near Platja d'en Bossa, or areas of Cala Llenya, but in summer almost all beaches ban them. Check with the local town hall before you go. Take water and a bowl for the wait at the port: in summer, the asphalt at the terminal gets very hot.

What is on board

Baleària's ships on this route have a cafeteria with sandwiches, salads, pastries and drinks, a shop, toilets with baby-changing facilities and open-air areas on the deck from which to watch the arrival in Ibiza. • DNI, NIE or passport, original and valid.

If you are from outside Spain, your passport is valid or, if you are from the European Union, your valid national identity document. A driving licence is not valid as a document for boarding. How to get there. The port of Denia is in the city centre, at the foot of the castle. If you arrive by the AP-7, take exit 62 (Ondara) and follow the road towards Denia; then follow the signs for "Ferry Port" or "Balearia Port". From Valencia and Alicante there is also a bus and the Alicante TRAM to Denia.

Parking. The Baleària terminal has long-stay parking to leave your car during the trip, and a free drop-off and pick-up area for passengers. In summer, arrive early: it fills up.

At the terminal. Ticket office for boarding passes, Baleària office, cafeteria and a waiting area with children's games. If you walk from the centre, the Panseta, a small free boat, takes you across to the terminal.

Timings. On foot, arrive 45 minutes before; with a car, 90 minutes before.

Port of Ibiza: arrival guide

Where you arrive. The Denia ferry docks at the Botafoc quay, on the other side of the bay of the port of Ibiza, opposite Dalt Vila. It is the quay for Baleària's ferries to the mainland and to Palma.

To the centre. On foot, about 20 minutes along the seafront promenade. By taxi, about 5 minutes; there is a rank at the terminal exit. The city bus links Botafoc with the centre.

To other parts of the island. By car, you go straight onto the Ibiza ring road and in about 20 minutes you are in San Antonio, Santa Eulària or at the airport.

To Formentera. Boats to Formentera leave from the Maritime Station in the centre, not from Botafoc: allow for the transfer.

Timings. On the way back to Denia, on foot 45 minutes before; with a car, 90 minutes before.

What to see in Ibiza when you arrive by ferry

Ibiza is much more than partying. The island has 210 kilometres of coastline, more than fifty coves and an interior of white villages and almond fields. These are our recommendations, ordered by distance from the port.

Dalt Vila and Ibiza town. A short walk from Botafoc. The walled city has been a World Heritage Site since 1999, together with the coastal posidonia, the Phoenician settlement of Sa Caleta and the Puig des Molins necropolis. Go up to the cathedral to see the port from above and come down to dine in the Marina district.

Talamanca and Ses Figueretes. The town's beaches. Talamanca, next to the Botafoc quay, has fine sand and calm waters: perfect for a first swim as you get off the ship or for waiting for the return.

Ses Salines and Es Cavallet. In the south, about 15 minutes by car. They are inside the Ses Salines Natural Park, with its salt ponds, dunes and clear waters. In summer, go early: the car park fills up.

San Antonio and the sunset. On the west coast. Its sunset promenade is the most famous place on the island to say goodbye to the day. Nearby are Cala Conta and Cala Bassa, two of the most photographed.

Es Vedrà. The rocky islet opposite Cala d'Hort, in the south-west. From the Cala d'Hort viewpoint, at sunset, you get one of the best-known views in the Mediterranean.

Santa Eulària and the north. The quietest Ibiza: seafront promenade, the Puig de Missa with its white church, and coves such as Cala Llonga, Cala Nova or Cala Sant Vicent. On Wednesdays, the hippy market at Es Canar, and on Saturdays, the one at Las Dalias, in Sant Carles.

The interior. Santa Gertrudis, Sant Joan and Santa Agnès are villages of white houses, carob fields and restaurants serving Ibizan cuisine. Try the sofrit pagès, the bullit de peix and the flaó, the cheese and mint pastry.

Before boarding: what to see in Denia

If you reach Denia with time to spare, it is worth staying a few hours. The castle, above the city, has views of the port and of Montgó. The Baix la Mar district, the fishermen's quarter, has coloured houses and good rice dishes. South of the port, Les Rotes is a rocky coastline with clear water for snorkelling; to the north, Les Marines are kilometres of sandy beach. If you are spending the day. Book the day trip in good time, because places are very limited. Check the price calendar: Monday to Thursday is cheaper. Take just a backpack and do not plan anything far from the port if you are on foot.

If you go by car in summer. Book a return: that way the shipping company handles the Ibiza vehicle charge. Car places are the first to sell out; on Fridays in July and August, a month ahead or more. Arrive 90 minutes early.

If you are travelling as a family. Choose the morning sailing in summer, to arrive with the day ahead of you. Apply the children's discount and, if you have it, the large family one: the search adds them up.

If you are travelling with your dog. Book its ticket with yours and bring the documents. Bear in mind that on this route there are no cabins: it will travel in a carrier or in the calm huts.

If you are a Balearic resident. Tick "Resident" when you search and check that your DNI or NIE is spelled correctly. With a large family, the discount can reach 85%.

If you go by motorbike or bike. The motorbike pays much less than the car and needs no paperwork for the Ibiza charge. The bike can also be taken on board: state it in the booking.

If you walk from the centre of Denia. Use the Panseta: it is free and drops you at the terminal.
