Formentera to Barcelona Ferry: How to Go via Ibiza

Formentera to Barcelona Ferry: How to Go via Ibiza

With Balearia, Trasmed · 6 to 7 weekly departures · 11:30 hours

There is no direct ferry from Formentera to Barcelona. You make the trip on two ferries: from La Savina to Ibiza and, from Ibiza, to Barcelona with Baleària or Trasmed.

The leg to Ibiza is short and has departures throughout the day. The Ibiza–Barcelona leg is the long one and the one that sets the plan: choose that departure first and then the Formentera one.

If you live in the Balearic Islands you get a 75% discount on the passenger ticket for each leg. It does not apply to the car.

With I Love Ferry you search both legs for the same date, see which ferry company runs each one and book at the ferry company's price.

Formentera to Barcelona ferry timetable

Here each leg has its own timetable. In the search box above, enter Formentera as the origin and Barcelona as the destination and you will see the combinations with a stop in Ibiza for your date.

The practical way to plan it is to start with the long ferry, Ibiza–Barcelona, which sails only a few times a day, and work backwards: then choose the Formentera departure that gets you to Ibiza with time to spare. Depending on the departure, the ferry to Barcelona may be an overnight one or a daytime one; the timetable tells you.

In winter there are fewer departures than in summer on both legs. If you travel on a long weekend or on a notable date, book in advance.

How long does the ferry from Formentera to Barcelona take?

It is a full day's journey. The crossing to Ibiza takes less than an hour; the crossing to Barcelona is the long part and varies a lot depending on whether it is a conventional overnight ferry or a faster one, and on the ferry company. Add the wait in Ibiza.

You can see the total duration of each combination in the search results.

Each leg is run by a different ferry company:

  • Formentera–Ibiza: Baleària and Trasmapi, which also takes cars.
  • Ibiza–Barcelona: Baleària and Trasmed GLE (Grimaldi group). Baleària has overnight departures from Barcelona to Ibiza and offers late disembarkation in a cabin; Trasmed has conventional overnight ferries.

If you combine two ferry companies, the tickets are separate: if you miss the connection, the second ferry will not wait. Always leave a margin in Ibiza.

Formentera to Barcelona ferry price

The price above is the lowest we have found for this route. It includes both legs, so it adds the crossing to Ibiza and the crossing to Barcelona. It changes with:

  • The date and time: July, August and weekends are dearer.
  • How far ahead you book: cheap tickets sell out first.
  • The accommodation: the seat is the basic option; a cabin adds to the price on overnight departures.
  • The car: it is paid for each leg and depends on its size.

The resident discount applies to the passenger, never to the car or the pet.

Balearic resident discount

If you live in the Balearic Islands you get a 75% discount on the passenger ticket, on both legs. Residents of Formentera also get a larger discount on the leg between Formentera and Ibiza, according to Baleària.

  • Say you are a resident in the search on iloveferry.com/ferris and bring your DNI or NIE and, if asked, your certificate of residence.
  • All passengers on the booking must be residents. If someone travelling is not, make two bookings.
  • The discount does not apply to the car.

Large family discount

Large families get a 20% discount (general category) or 50% (special category) on the passenger ticket on domestic routes, and it does not apply to the car. Bring the valid large family card and each traveller's ID. All passengers on a booking must have the same discount; if not, make separate bookings.

With this discount, Baleària usually asks you to collect your boarding passes at the ticket office: arrive with time to spare.

Formentera to Barcelona ferry with a car

You can take your car, but you will have to board twice: in La Savina and in Ibiza. When booking, give the type of car, the make and the model; the price depends on its dimensions.

  • Ibiza in summer. Between 1 June and 30 September, bringing a car into Ibiza requires authorisation from the Consell d'Eivissa, with a daily quota. Cars in transit to or from Formentera must apply for it at ibizacircular.es and, according to the information we have, without a fee. Tell us before you book if your stop in Ibiza falls on those dates.
  • Arrival time. With Baleària, on Barcelona–Ibiza you must arrive 90 minutes early with a car; on the short Ibiza–Formentera leg, 30 minutes.
  • In the port of Barcelona. It is a low-emission zone: check whether your car can drive in it.

Formentera to Barcelona ferry with a dog

On the long leg, the most comfortable option is for your pet to sleep with you in a Baleària pet friendly cabin: it is valid for up to two animals if together they do not exceed 30 kg. The calm kennels are protected spaces on deck or in the garage where you cannot keep the animal company during the crossing. With Trasmed, pets travel in an adapted cabin, in a seat (under 8 kg, in a carrier) or in kennels. An animal can never be left in the car.

On board the Ibiza Barcelona ferry

On the long leg you can travel in a seat or in a cabin. On Baleària's ferries there are standard, superior and VIP seats, double or quadruple cabins, a restaurant and a cafeteria; on overnight routes there is a late disembarkation service so you can stay in your cabin a little longer in the morning. The car stays on the car deck, which is locked during the crossing: take down what you need beforehand.

Ports of Formentera (La Savina) and Barcelona

Where to board in Formentera

The only port in Formentera is La Savina, in the north of the island, a few kilometres from Sant Francesc and es Pujols. There is car and motorbike hire in the port itself and a bus to the beaches. If you arrived with a car, the Formentera.eco permit regulates cars entering the island, not leaving it.

Arriving in Barcelona

In Barcelona, Baleària boards foot passengers at the North Terminal (World Trade Center) and cars at adjoining quays that may vary depending on the weather or port operations; check your ticket. Baleària offers a free shuttle bus between the terminal and the quays, which leaves about 75 minutes before the ferry and stops next to the ship.

Trasmed sails from another terminal in the port: check on your ticket which one.

The stop in Ibiza

Ibiza has two ferry terminals, Botafoc and the Nueva Ibiza maritime station. Check on each ticket which one applies and do not count on rushing between them. Baleària has a free shuttle service between the two for foot passengers on some connections; ask whether it covers yours.

Documents you need to board

This is a domestic route: adults need a valid DNI, NIE or passport. With a car, bring the vehicle documents and valid insurance, and the car must be the one on the ticket. If you have a resident or large family discount, bring the document that proves it.

I Love Ferry tips for going from Formentera to Barcelona

  • Start with the ferry to Barcelona. It has few departures; you choose the Formentera one afterwards, with a margin.
  • Leave a margin for the sea. If it is windy, departures can change or be cancelled. Baleària notifies you by WhatsApp or SMS: give a mobile number you use.
  • Car in summer. If you pass through Ibiza between 1 June and 30 September, check the transit authorisation before booking.
  • Separate tickets. If you buy each leg on your own and miss the connection, there is no guarantee of a place on the next ferry.

Frequently asked questions about the Formentera (La Savina) Barcelona ferry

Any questions about your ferry?

Here are the questions travellers ask us most. If yours is not here, our team of real people helps you before, during and after your trip.

See all the frequently asked questions >>
Is there a direct ferry from Formentera to Barcelona?

No. You have to change in Ibiza: first the ferry from La Savina to Ibiza and then the one from Ibiza to Barcelona, with Baleària or Trasmed.

How long does it take to get from Formentera to Barcelona by ferry?

It is a whole day's journey: the crossing to Ibiza takes less than an hour and the crossing to Barcelona is the long part. Add the wait in Ibiza. In the search you can see the total duration of each combination.

How many tickets do I need?

It depends on how you book. With the same ferry company you can usually buy the trip with the stop included; if you combine two ferry companies, they are two tickets and the connection is your responsibility. With I Love Ferry you see both options in the same search.

Can I go from Formentera to Barcelona with my car?

Yes, but you board twice. Between 1 June and 30 September, if you pass through Ibiza with the car, you need a transit authorisation at ibizacircular.es. Ask us before booking if your stop falls on those dates.

What discount do Balearic residents get?

75% on the passenger ticket for each leg, and not on the car. All passengers on the booking must be residents; if not, separate bookings are needed. Bring your DNI or NIE and the certificate of residence in case you are asked for it.

What do I do if I miss the ferry from Ibiza to Barcelona?

With tickets from two ferry companies, the second ferry will not wait and you will have to change or buy another ticket. With Baleària, contact their customer service as soon as possible: it offers alternatives in the event of cancellations due to bad weather. That is why it is a good idea to leave a margin in Ibiza.

Is it better to travel to Barcelona at night or by day?

If you want to save a night's accommodation, the overnight ferry with a cabin is the comfortable choice. If you prefer to arrive in daylight, look at the daytime departures. The timetable tells you which ferry sails each departure.

Can I take my dog from Formentera to Barcelona?

Yes. With Baleària it can go in a pet friendly cabin, in a pet friendly seat if it is small, or in a calm kennel. With Trasmed it travels in an adapted cabin, in a seat (under 8 kg, in a carrier) or in a kennel. Add the pet when you book.

Which port do I choose in Barcelona?

You do not choose: the ferry company decides. Baleària uses the North Terminal for foot passengers, and Trasmed another terminal in the port. Check your ticket and do not rely on the address from another trip.

What alternative is there if I want the shortest route to the mainland?

The ferry from Formentera to Denia with Baleària, with a stop in Ibiza. From Denia you continue by road to Valencia, about 100 km away, or further.
