Menorca to Barcelona Ferry: Ciutadella, Mahón, Baleària, GNV, Trasmed

Menorca to Barcelona Ferry: Ciutadella, Mahón, Baleària, GNV, Trasmed

With Balearia · 14 to 26 weekly departures · 3:30 hours - 9 hours

To get from Menorca to Barcelona by ferry there are two routes depending on the port of departure. From Ciutadella, in the west of the island, Baleària sails, with a fast ferry and a conventional ferry. From Mahón, in the east, GNV and Trasmed sail, with overnight ships.

Choosing the port is the first decision: Ciutadella and Mahón are about 45 km apart and a ticket for one port is not valid at the other. Choose the one closest to your accommodation or your home.

Residents of the Balearic Islands get a 75% discount on the passenger ticket, not on the car. You can travel on foot, with a car or with a dog.

Each route has its own page, with timetables, the ferry company's conditions and tips for the port.

Menorca to Barcelona ferry timetable

Below you have the departures for the date you choose, from both ports. The important thing: the timetables for Ciutadella and Mahón are different because they are different ships and ferry companies.

  • Ciutadella (Baleària): there is a fast ferry of a few hours and an overnight conventional ferry, depending on the day.
  • Mahón (GNV and Trasmed): conventional ships; the crossing is overnight and you arrive in the morning.

In summer there are more departures, and in winter fewer. If your trip has a fixed date, look first at the day you want and leave the port for later.

Three ferry companies link Menorca with Barcelona, and each has its own port:

  • Baleària sails from Ciutadella. It has a fast ferry and a conventional ferry, online check-in and the Baleària Club points programme.
  • GNV sails from Mahón, with overnight ferries with cabins and a cabin for pets (limited places). It has myGNV Club for members.
  • Trasmed (Trasmed GLE, formerly Trasmediterránea) sails from Mahón, with overnight ferries, luggage with no weight limit and pets in an adapted cabin, seat or dog houses.

The source of each piece of information and the full conditions are on the page for each route: Ciutadella Barcelona and Mahón Barcelona.

Menorca to Barcelona ferry price

The price you see above is the lowest recent fare among the departures for the date. It changes depending on the ferry company, type of ship, accommodation and date. In general, the fast ferry and the overnight ship with a cabin are not comparable: one buys speed and the other a night's sleep.

The car is paid separately and depends on its dimensions. As everywhere in the area, July, August, Easter and long weekends go up first. If you always travel from Menorca, booking in advance gives you more room to choose.

Balearic resident discount: Menorca Barcelona

If you live in the Balearic Islands you get a 75% discount on the passenger ticket, with all three ferry companies. It does not apply to the vehicle.

  • Say you are a resident in the search on iloveferry.com/ferris. In a single booking all passengers must be residents; if not, make separate bookings.
  • Bring your DNI or NIE and your certificate of residence.
  • The resident discount only applies on routes to or from your region of residence: here, the Balearic Islands.

Large family discount on the Menorca Barcelona ferry

Large families with a Spanish certificate get 20% (general) or 50% (special) off the passenger ticket on domestic routes. It does not apply to the car. Bring the original certificate and each traveller's identity document. See ferry with large family discount and each ferry company's conditions on the route page.

Menorca Barcelona ferry with a car

All three ferry companies take cars, motorbikes, vans and motorhomes. State the vehicle type and its real dimensions when booking, because the price depends on them. The driver pays for their own ticket separately, and the resident discount does not apply to the car.

One practical difference: on GNV routes you cannot get to the garage during the crossing, so take up what you will need. In Barcelona, the port is a low-emission zone and Baleària's car boarding quay depends on the ship.

Menorca Barcelona ferry with a dog

You can travel with a dog on all three ferry companies, but the rules differ and that affects the route you choose:

  • Baleària (Ciutadella): up to 10 kg in a carrier in the lounge; pet friendly seat or cabin on some ships; kennel for large dogs.
  • GNV (Mahón): cabin for pets with limited places, or a kennel.
  • Trasmed (Mahón): adapted cabins, seat (under 8 kg, in a carrier) and dog houses.

Ports of Menorca (Ciutadella and Mahón) and Barcelona

The two ports of Menorca: Ciutadella and Mahón

Menorca has two ports with ferries to Barcelona, one at each end of the island:

  • Mahón (Maó), in the east, inside the city and a few minutes' walk from the centre. The airport is about 6 km away.
  • Ciutadella, on the west coast, about 45 km from Mahón. There is no train: you get there by car, taxi or bus.

The island's main road links the two in about three quarters of an hour by car.

Arriving in Barcelona

In Barcelona, Baleària has its foot passenger terminal at the North Terminal, next to the World Trade Center. GNV and Trasmed use the San Beltrán quay area. They are different terminals: check yours on your ticket, especially if someone is picking you up.

Getting around Menorca before boarding

If you live or are staying in the centre of the island, the distance to both ports is similar, and the deciding factor is the type of ship: Ciutadella for the fast ferry, Mahón for the overnight one. If you are staying in or near Ciutadella, leave from Ciutadella; if you are staying in the east, leave from Mahón. There is no train and in high season it is wise to have the car or taxi to the port sorted.

Documents for travelling from Menorca to Barcelona

It is a domestic route: adults travel with a valid DNI, NIE or passport. Minors carry their DNI or the family record book. With a car, the vehicle registration document and the driver's licence. With a resident or large family discount, the document that proves it.

I Love Ferry tips for travelling from Menorca to Barcelona

  1. Decide the port first. Ciutadella and Mahón are about 45 km apart and the tickets are not interchangeable.
  2. Choose the type of trip. If you want to arrive in a few hours, look at the Ciutadella fast ferry; if you have a night to spare, the Mahón ferry with a cabin.
  3. With a dog, check the rules first. They are very different among the three ferry companies.
  4. Put in your mobile number when booking with Baleària. If there is wind, they notify you by WhatsApp or SMS and offer alternatives; with GNV and Trasmed, follow the notice on their website.
