The quickest route is Baleària to Ciutadella by fast ferry, in 3 hours 30 minutes. The other crossings are overnight, from 7 hours 45 minutes to 9 hours, and drop you in Menorca first thing in the morning. The cheapest is usually Trasmed to Mahón, from €29.
Which ferry company to choose
All three companies take you to Menorca, but the journey is very different with each. These are the differences that matter most:
In the table above, each company's name takes you to its section on this page, and the button takes you to that company's sailings in our search engine.
Barcelona to Menorca ferry in 4 hours: the Baleària fast ferry
Yes, there is a fast ferry from Barcelona to Menorca: the Margarita Salas from Baleària, which sails from Barcelona to Ciutadella in 3 hours 30 minutes. Depending on the day and the state of the sea, it takes between 3 h 30 min and 4 hours, which is why it is known as the 4-hour ferry. No ship makes the crossing in 3 hours.
It normally leaves at 16:30 from Terminal Nord and arrives in Ciutadella around 20:00. There is usually one sailing a day, with extra sailings in high season. Car spaces are limited: in summer, book in advance.
What the journey is like on the Margarita Salas fast ferry
The Margarita Salas is Baleària's fastest ship on this route and one of the most modern in its fleet. It runs on natural gas, which pollutes less than diesel. It leaves Barcelona in the afternoon and reaches Ciutadella at dinner time, so you don't lose a day of your holiday: if you finish work at midday, you sleep in Menorca that same night.
On board you travel in a seat, with a cafeteria, a children's area and an outdoor terrace to watch the arrival at the island. There are no cabins: you don't need them in three and a half hours. Car spaces are few, and in July and August they sell out weeks ahead: if you want the fast ferry with a car, book as soon as you have your dates.
In bad weather, the fast ferry is more affected than the large ships: it may take longer or, if the storm is severe, the company may move the sailing to the night ferry. If that happens, Baleària will notify you on the mobile number you gave when booking.

Sailings from Menorca to Barcelona
The return follows the same pattern. From Ciutadella, Baleària has daytime sailings by fast ferry and night sailings by conventional ferry. From Mahón, Trasmed and GNV sail in the evening or at night and reach Barcelona first thing in the morning. If you take the night ferry back, you make the most of a full last beach day and arrive in Barcelona in the early hours, in time to go to work.
You can book a return with different ferry companies: for example, go by fast ferry to Ciutadella and come back on the night ferry from Mahón. In the I Love Ferry search engine you choose each leg separately and see the total price.

How long does the ferry from Barcelona to Menorca take?
It depends on the ship and the port. The Baleària fast ferry to Ciutadella takes 3 hours 30 minutes, and in rough seas it can take about 4 hours. The night ferries take between 7 hours 45 minutes (GNV to Mahón) and 9 hours (Baleària to Ciutadella); they leave between 21:30 and 22:30 and arrive early in the morning. In short: from 3 h 30 min to 9 hours. It is about 210 km by sea to Ciutadella and about 276 km to Mahón.
Why the night ferries take so long
Night ferries are not slower for no reason. They are large passenger and cargo ships that carry cars, lorries and goods for the island. They sail at night so they can reach Menorca first thing and unload the cargo in the morning. For the passenger, that is an advantage: you sleep in your cabin or seat and arrive with the whole day ahead of you, without paying for a hotel night.
Barcelona to Menorca ferry prices
The price changes with the ferry company, the season and the accommodation:
| Item | From | Up to |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger in a seat (night ferry) | €29 one way | €65 one way |
| Passenger in a seat (fast ferry) | €70 one way | €135 one way |
| Standard car + driver | €89 one way | €189 one way |
| Inside cabin (per person) | +€49 | +€89 |
| Balearic resident (−75%) | €11 one way | €19 one way (fast ferry) |
The cheapest is usually Trasmed on the night ferry, from €29. The Baleària fast ferry costs more, from €70, but saves you time. In July and August prices can double; from November to March you find the best deals. To compare, count the total cost: if the cheapest port leaves you 45 km from your accommodation, the saving can disappear on a hire car or petrol.
How much does the ferry from Barcelona to Menorca cost with a car?
At I Love Ferry, a driver with a standard car pays from €89 one way on the night ferry. On the fast ferry and in high season the price goes up, and in August it can exceed €180 per crossing. A family of four with a car pays quite a bit more than two adults without one: the car is usually the most expensive part of the ticket. If you are Balearic residents, the 75% is deducted from each passenger, not from the car.
How to pay less for the ferry to Menorca
- Compare the three ferry companies. The difference between the cheapest and the most expensive on the same day can be more than €40 per person.
- Check the price calendar. Above you have the lowest price for each day and the company that offers it, 12 months ahead.
- Travel at night. Night ferries are cheaper than the fast ferry, and you save a hotel night.
- Book summer in winter. Black Friday and early-year campaigns bring the best discounts for July and August.
- Apply all your discounts. Resident, large family, children: the search engine adds them up and shows you the final price before you pay.
Offers on the ferry to Menorca
Each offer on this page says which ferry company it is from, which port it goes to and when it ends. When an offer ends, we remove it. Check its conditions before you book: some do not allow changes or refunds and others cannot be combined with other discounts.
Ciutadella or Mahón: which port to choose
The Barcelona to Menorca ferry arrives at two ports. Ciutadella leaves you near the best beaches on the west of the island; Mahón, in the capital of Menorca. Menorca has no trains and the two towns are linked by road, about 45 km apart. Rule of thumb: if your hotel is in the west, go to Ciutadella; if it is in the east or near the airport, go to Mahón.
Port of Ciutadella (west Menorca)
Port Comercial Son Blanc, 07760 Ciutadella
You arrive at the port of Ciutadella, in west Menorca, a few minutes from the old town. It is the port for Baleària. Nearby you have Cala Turqueta, Son Saura and Cala Mitjana. There are taxis and buses to Mahón, taking about an hour; by car, you head straight onto the main Me-1 road.
Port of Mahón (east Menorca)
Estación Cos Nou, 6, 07701 Mahón
You arrive at the port of Mahón, the capital of Menorca, with the port right in the town. It is the port for Trasmed and GNV. The airport is about 6 km away and the east and south of the island are close. There are taxis and buses to Ciutadella, taking about an hour; by car, you take the Me-1.
Boarding in Barcelona: two terminals
In Barcelona there are two boarding areas. Baleària sails from Terminal Nord, on the Moll de Barcelona, next to the World Trade Center; the nearest metro station is Drassanes (L3, green). Trasmed and GNV sail from the Estación Marítima at Muelle San Beltrán. Arrive 1 hour before on foot and 1 hour 30 minutes before with a car or motorbike.
Arriving in Ciutadella by ferry
Where you dock. The Baleària ferry arrives at the Son Blanc commercial port, on the outskirts of Ciutadella, not the old harbour in the centre. The centre is about 5 minutes away by car or taxi.
What is nearby. The old town of Ciutadella, with the cathedral, Plaça des Born and the old harbour lined with restaurants. To the south, Cala Turqueta, Macarella and Macarelleta; to the north, Cala Morell and the Algaiarens coast.
Getting around. There are taxis when ships arrive and a bus to Mahón, taking about an hour. By car, you head straight onto the Me-1, the road that crosses the island.
If you arrive in the early hours. The Baleària night ferry arrives around 06:30. Many accommodations don't let you check in until mid-morning: ask yours to store your luggage and have breakfast in the old harbour.
Arriving in Mahón by ferry
Where you dock. Trasmed and GNV arrive at the Mahón Estación Marítima, inside the port and at the foot of the town. You walk up to the centre by the stairs or the port road.
What is nearby. The centre of Mahón, with the Claustre del Carme market and the Fortress of Isabel II. To the south, Binibeca and Punta Prima; to the north, Es Grau and the s'Albufera des Grau Natural Park.
Getting around. There are taxis and a bus to Ciutadella, taking about an hour. The airport is about 6 km away. By car, you take the Me-1.
If you arrive in the early hours. GNV arrives around 05:30 and Trasmed around 07:00. Ask your accommodation to store your luggage and have breakfast by the port.
Boarding at the port of Barcelona
How to get to the port of Barcelona
By metro. The nearest stop to Baleària's Terminal Nord is Drassanes (L3, green). From there, it is about a 15-minute walk along the Moll de Barcelona, towards the World Trade Center. To the San Beltrán Estación Marítima, used by Trasmed and GNV, the walk is longer: if you have suitcases, take a taxi.
By bus. From Plaça de Colón, at the end of La Rambla, city buses run to the port's ferry terminals.
By taxi. From Sants station, about 15 minutes; from El Prat airport, between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Tell the taxi driver the ferry company: each one sails from a different terminal.
By car. Follow the signs for “Port de Barcelona – Ferris” from the Ronda Litoral. The port of Barcelona is inside the Low Emission Zone: check your environmental label before you set off.
Timing. On foot, 1 hour before departure; with a car or motorbike, 1 hour 30 minutes before.
Check the terminal on your ticket
It is the most common mistake on this route: going to the wrong terminal. Baleària sails from Terminal Nord; Trasmed and GNV, from San Beltrán. Both are in the port, but there is a good walk between them. Your I Love Ferry boarding pass shows the terminal for your ship.
Barcelona to Menorca ferry with a car
With a car you can explore the whole island freely. All three ferry companies carry vehicles:
| Standard car (up to 5 m) + driver | from €89 one way |
| Car + trailer | from €125 one way |
| Motorhome | from €149 one way |
| Motorbike | from €39 one way |
| Check-in at the port | 90 minutes before |
The Baleària fast ferry has few car spaces: in summer, book them in advance. The port of Barcelona is a Low Emission Zone, so check your environmental label. More information in travel to Menorca with a car.
Boarding with a car, step by step
- Arrive 90 minutes early at your ferry company's terminal.
- Have everyone's ticket and ID to hand. At the checkpoint they ask for the boarding pass, printed or on your mobile.
- Wait in the lane you are shown. Cars go in order, depending on size and the vehicle deck.
- Park where you are told, with the handbrake on, in gear and the alarm switched off.
- Go up with what you need for the night: toiletry bag, clothes, charger, the dog's food. You can't go down to the vehicle deck during the crossing.
- On arrival, wait for the announcement to go down to your car.
Take your car or hire one in Menorca?
Menorca has no trains and the bus reaches the towns and the big beaches, but not many of the coves. For a week or more, taking your own car is usually cheaper than hiring one in summer, and you can bring as much luggage as you like. For a short break of a few days, you can go without a car and get around by bus, or hire one for just a day. In summer, some coves have restricted car access and are reached by shuttle bus or on foot: check before you go.
By motorbike or bike to Menorca
Menorca is an ideal island for a motorbike: short roads, little traffic outside August and easy parking by the coves. A motorbike pays from €39 one way, much less than a car, and boards by the same ramp. Bring a lashing strap or ask for it to be secured on the vehicle deck. Bicycles also travel on the ferry: mention yours when booking. With one you can ride stages of the Camí de Cavalls or get between the inland towns, which are only a few kilometres apart.
Documents needed to board
To take the ferry from Barcelona to Menorca you need:
- ID card, NIE or passport, original and valid. If you are from the European Union, your national identity card is enough.
- Boarding pass, printed or on your mobile.
- With a car or motorbike: vehicle registration document, ITV (roadworthiness certificate) and valid insurance.
- With a dog or cat: passport or health booklet, microchip and up-to-date vaccinations.
- Minors: their own ID or the family book. If they travel without their parents, a signed authorisation.
- With a discount: the document that proves it (residence, large family certificate). The ferry company may ask for it at boarding.
A driving licence is not valid as an identity document for boarding.
What to bring on the night ferry
Pack a small bag for the night, because large luggage stays in the car or in the left-luggage room, and you can't go down to the vehicle deck during the crossing:
- Toiletry bag, pyjamas and clothes for the next day.
- A jacket or a light blanket: the air conditioning in the lounges is strong.
- Phone charger and headphones.
- Some dinner and water if you don't want to buy on board.
- Eye mask and earplugs if you sleep in a seat.
- Whatever your pet needs for the night.
Barcelona to Menorca ferry with a cabin
On the night ferries you can book a cabin to sleep during the crossing:
| Inside cabin (2 to 4 berths) | from €49 per person |
| Outside cabin (2 to 4 berths) | from €69 per person |
| Suite (some ships) | from €99 per person |
| Single cabin (Trasmed and GNV) | from €89 |
| Pet cabin | from €59 per person |

What the night on board is like
On the night ferries you have two ways to sleep: in a seat or in a cabin. The seat is the cheapest option, and you can sleep in it if you bring an eye mask and something warm. The cabin, on the other hand, is a small room with bunks or beds, a private bathroom with a shower, towels and bed linen. If you are travelling as a couple or a family, a shared cabin works out at a good price per person and you arrive in Menorca rested.
When you board, leave your luggage in the cabin and take a walk around the ship: cafeteria, restaurant, an outdoor deck to watch the ship leave the port of Barcelona. Most passengers have dinner on board or bring their own, and go to sleep early. In the morning, the crew makes an announcement before arrival, in time for a shower and breakfast.

Barcelona to Menorca ferry with children and family
- Babies (under 2): travel free, without taking up a seat.
- Children: get a discount with all three ferry companies. Ages and percentages vary from one company to another; the search engine applies the one that matches the child's age on the day of travel, and you see it before you pay.
- Pushchairs: carried free of charge.
- On board: family areas on all ships, cafeterias with a children's menu and cots in cabins on request.
Tips for travelling to Menorca with children
- At night, a cabin. Children sleep through the whole crossing and reach the island full of energy. A four-berth family cabin is usually cheaper than a night in a hotel.
- By day, the fast ferry. With small children, the 3 h 30 min on the Margarita Salas pass between the children's area and the terrace.
- For the early-morning disembarkation, have breakfast ready and a plan for the first hours, until you can get into your accommodation.
- If anyone gets seasick, sit in the middle of the ship, on the lowest deck, and look at the horizon.
Barcelona to Menorca ferry with a dog
All three ferry companies on the route accept dogs. Include your pet in the booking and bring its vet booklet, microchip and up-to-date vaccinations:
- Baleària: pet-friendly seat (up to 8 kg in a carrier), pet-friendly cabin and a calm-down kennel.
- Trasmed: adapted cabins, seat (under 8 kg, in a carrier) and kennels.
- GNV: pet-friendly cabins; on the outdoor decks, on a lead.
The pet cabin costs from €59 per person and the deck kennels, from €25 (only on some ships). Potentially dangerous breeds can travel with the additional documentation. A dog must never be left in the car.
Full information in travel by ferry with a dog.
With your dog in Menorca
Menorca is a very dog-friendly island: the Camí de Cavalls, the path that circles the island, can be walked with them on a lead. In summer, almost all beaches ban dogs, but there are some permitted areas in each municipality: ask at the town hall before you go. At the arrival port, especially in the early hours, take your dog for a short walk before getting into the car.

The Barcelona to Menorca route month by month
This guide helps you choose a date. The weather information is indicative; the sailings information comes from the ferry companies' timetables.
January and February. The quietest months. There are always at least 7 sailings a week between the three companies, and there is almost always space, including for cars. Travellers are mainly residents and hauliers. On some days of tramontana, the north wind, the crossing is rougher or the sailing is delayed. It is the time of the lowest prices.
March. The island starts to wake up. It is a good month for walking the Camí de Cavalls, with mild temperatures and green countryside.
April. Easter: the first peak of the year, with many families from Barcelona. Book early if you are taking a car. Outside those days, April is ideal for inland Menorca and the Talayotic sites.
May. Hotels and restaurants open and the seasonal sailings begin. A very good month to go: few people on the beaches and low-season prices.
June. On 23 and 24 June, Ciutadella celebrates the Sant Joan festivities, the most famous in Menorca, with horses and thousands of visitors. Ships to Ciutadella on those days sell out months ahead: if you want to go, book as soon as the dates open. From June there are more sailings a week: up to 15 to Ciutadella and 11 to Mahón.
July and August. High season. More sailings, but also more people and higher prices: in these months prices can double. Car spaces on the fast ferry and cabins are the first to sell out. The water is warm, the sea is usually calm and nights on deck are very pleasant. In Mahón, the festivities of the Mare de Déu de Gràcia, in early September, also fill the ships.
September. For many, the best month: warm water, fewer people and falling prices. A good part of the summer sailings continue.
October. There are still beach days and the island is quiet. Sailings start to be reduced.
November and December. Low season, with the best deals, especially the Black Friday ones for next summer. Over the December bank-holiday weekend and at Christmas, many island families travel: if you go on those days, book early.
What to see in Menorca when you arrive by ferry
Menorca has been a Biosphere Reserve since 1993 and its Talayotic remains have been a World Heritage Site since 2023. It is a small island, about 50 km from end to end, so from either port you can reach anywhere in under an hour.
Ciutadella. The former capital, with its cathedral, its palaces and the old harbour, narrow and lined with restaurants. At night, the atmosphere is in Plaça des Born and the streets of the centre.
The southern coves. Macarella, Macarelleta, Cala Turqueta, Cala Mitjana and Son Saura: white sand, pines down to the water and a turquoise blue that looks Caribbean. They are close to Ciutadella. In summer, car access to some is restricted: there are shuttle buses.
Mahón. The capital, on one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean. Take a boat trip around the harbour, visit the Fortress of Isabel II and try Mahón gin and Mahón-Menorca cheese.
Fornells. A fishing village in the north, famous for its lobster stew (caldereta de langosta).
Monte Toro. The highest point on the island, in the centre, with a sanctuary and views over the whole of Menorca.
The Camí de Cavalls. The path that circles the whole island by the sea, about 185 km, split into short stages. It can be done on foot, by bike or on horseback.
Talayotic Menorca. The Naveta des Tudons, near Ciutadella, and the settlements of Torre d'en Galmés or Talatí de Dalt are remains more than 3,000 years old.
Binibeca Vell. A village of white houses by the sea, in the south-east, near Mahón.
And if you want to continue your trip, from Ciutadella there is a ferry to Alcudia, in Mallorca: see the Ciutadella to Alcudia ferry.
