Palermo to Salerno Ferry: Grimaldi, Tickets and Tips
With Grimaldi Lines
To get from Palermo to Salerno by ferry there is one ferry company: Grimaldi Lines. It links the two ports with few sailings a week, and the departure days change depending on the period of the year.
It is a route within Italy, with no border and no passport. All passengers, babies included, need an original, valid identity document, and the name must match the one on the ticket.
You can travel on foot, with a car, motorbike, motorhome or pet, by adding them when you book. With a car, the check-in time is earlier than on foot.
With I Love Ferry you choose the date, see the sailings that exist that day and book by entering passengers, ages, vehicle and pet.
Palermo to Salerno ferry timetable
There is no daily sailing on this route: Grimaldi offers few sailings a week and changes the calendar by period. So it is best to start with the departure day and adapt the rest of the trip, not the other way round.
How to read the timetable
The timetable above shows the actual departures for the date you choose, with departure and arrival times. If your date has no ship, try the days around it before looking for another route.
A ship that sometimes continues to Tunis
Grimaldi's line linking Salerno and Palermo continues, in some periods, to Tunis. If the ship on your sailing comes from another port, check in the timetable where it departs from.

Who runs the Palermo to Salerno ferry: Grimaldi Lines
This route is run by Grimaldi Lines. Grimaldi links Palermo with Livorno, Naples, Cagliari and Salerno, and from Palermo and Salerno it also has lines to Tunis. Salerno–Palermo is its link between the Campania coast and the island.
What sets this line apart from the Naples ones: fewer sailings and more dependence on the day. In return, you leave from Salerno, away from the Naples traffic if you are coming from the Amalfi Coast or southern Campania.
Palermo to Salerno ferry price
The price you see above is the lowest recent one for an adult without a vehicle. Your ticket depends on:
- The departure day: with few weekly sailings, cheap places on a particular day sell out sooner.
- The vehicle: it is paid separately from the passenger and depends on its dimensions.
- Age: Grimaldi has fares for children, young people and over-60s (see below).
- Taxes and services: some Grimaldi discounts do not apply to fixed taxes or on-board services.
Booking in advance is the most effective approach when there are only a few sailings a week.
Discounts for children, young people and seniors on Grimaldi
- Under 3: travel free.
- From 3 to under 12: 50% of the fare, without fixed taxes or services.
- From 12 to 26: 20% with the "New Young" offer.
- Over 60: 20% with the "New Senior" offer.
Enter each passenger's age when you search and the search tool applies what is relevant. Grimaldi also has a "Sicilians Doc" fare for Sicily residents on the Salerno–Palermo line; it is on its website, but whether it can be bought through I Love Ferry is still to be confirmed.

Ports of Palermo and Salerno
Port of Palermo
Port of Salerno
How to get to the port of Palermo
Palermo has its port right next to the urban area. According to GNV, which has another terminal in the same port, Palermo Centrale station is about 2 km away and several city bus lines connect it with the quay.
Grimaldi's terminal may not be the same as GNV's: your ticket tells you where to report. If you arrive by car, leave with time to spare for city traffic and for boarding, which closes before departure.
Arriving in Salerno
The ship arrives at the port of Salerno, on the Campania coast. It is about 50 km from Naples and is the natural gateway to the Amalfi Coast and the Cilento coast.
If you carry on by car, allow for motorway traffic towards Naples or the south at summer weekends. Grimaldi's specific terminal appears on your ticket.
Documents for the Palermo to Salerno ferry
Even though it is a trip within Italy, Grimaldi requires an original, valid identity document for everyone, children and babies too. The name and registration number on the ticket must match the real ones.
If you have a child, youth or senior fare, bring a document proving your age.
