Salerno to Palermo Ferry: Tickets and Tips for the Crossing

With Grimaldi Lines

The Salerno to Palermo ferry is operated by Grimaldi Lines. It leaves the port of Salerno, in Campania, and arrives at the port of Palermo. There are few services a week, which change by period.

It is a route within Italy: you do not need a passport, but you do need an original, valid identity document for all passengers, babies included.

If your date does not match the Salerno sailing, Naples–Palermo has more frequency and is about 50 km away by road.

On I Love Ferry you search the date, see the departures and book with a car, motorbike, motorhome or pet.

Salerno Palermo ferry timetable

There is no boat every day here. Grimaldi schedules few services a week and changes them by period, so the calendar for your date rules. The timetable above shows the real departures, with departure and arrival times.

Departure from Salerno and continuation to Tunis

The line that leaves Salerno for Palermo continues, in some periods, to Tunis. Salerno–Palermo is only one leg of a longer route.

If there is no sailing on the day you want

Look at the days around it or compare with Naples–Palermo.

Check the departures for your date in our search engine. Schedules and prices

Indicative schedules and subject to variation by the ferry company for operational reasons without prior notice.

Only Grimaldi Lines operates this route, the same ferry company that links Palermo with Livorno and Naples and that has lines to Tunis from Salerno and Palermo. There is no other ferry company here to compare for the same pair of ports.

For the traveller, that means a single luggage, pet and boarding policy, which is Grimaldi's.

Salerno Palermo ferry price

The price you see above is the lowest recent one for an adult on foot. It changes with the day of departure, how far ahead you book and the vehicle, which is paid separately according to its dimensions.

  • Few sailings: each cheap place on a given day sells out sooner than on a daily line.
  • Fees: some Grimaldi discounts do not apply to fixed fees or to services on board.
  • Age: children, young people and over-60s have their own fare.

Children and discounts on the Salerno Palermo ferry

Grimaldi applies these fares by age:

  • Under 3, free.
  • From 3 to under 12, 50% of the fare, without fixed fees or services.
  • From 12 to 26, 20% («New Young»).
  • Over 60, 20% («New Senior»).

If you are a resident of Sicily, Grimaldi has the «Sicilians Doc» fare on Salerno–Palermo, with spouse and children included; it does not cover fixed fees or services on board, such as meals or a pet in a cabin. Whether I Love Ferry offers it is yet to be confirmed.

Salerno Palermo ferry with a car

The car boards with its own booking: Grimaldi takes cars up to 1.90 m high (fare up to 4 m long and from 4.01 to 5 m), motorhomes and minibuses up to 9 m long, motorbikes and scooters. One vehicle per passenger and no goods for sale.

If you leave Salerno with a roof box, measure the whole set-up: Grimaldi counts roof boxes and bike racks within the dimensions. E-bikes and e-scooters travel free if you add them to the booking.

Arrival time

At most 2 h before with a vehicle and 1 h without a vehicle on a domestic route.

Salerno Palermo ferry with a dog

With Grimaldi your dog travels if you add it to the ticket. On board there are kennels for dogs and cats. In a cabin it is allowed only with the «pet in cabin» service, which is paid separately, up to 3 pets and with a final cleaning.

On outdoor decks, on a lead and muzzled. In public lounges, only in a carrier and at the purser's discretion. More information in ferry with a dog.

Ports of Salerno and Palermo

How to get to the port of Salerno

Salerno is a coastal city in Campania, about 50 km from Naples and a few kilometres from the Amalfi Coast. Grimaldi's terminal in Salerno does not appear in our data: your ticket states the check-in point.

Allow plenty of time to get to the port, especially in summer and at weekends, and for the check-in time if you have a car.

Arrival at Palermo

The ship docks at the port of Palermo, next to the centre. According to GNV, which also operates there, Palermo Centrale station is about 2 km from the quay and several urban bus lines pass through the area.

If you are continuing by road, bear in mind that Palermo is a city with heavy traffic: leave the port without rushing and with the route already decided.

Documents for the Salerno Palermo ferry

All passengers, including children and babies, need an original, valid identity document. If you take a car, the registration number on the ticket must match that of the vehicle; the same goes for each passenger's name.

I Love Ferry tips for Salerno Palermo

  1. Start with the calendar. Few sailings a week: fix the day of the boat and organise the rest.
  2. Compare with Naples before booking. If your date fails at Salerno, Naples is about 50 km away and has more sailings.
  3. Check in with time to spare. 1 h on foot, up to 2 h with a car.
  4. Don't get tangled up with the resident fare. If you are entitled to «Sicilians Doc», check what it includes and what it doesn't before buying it.
