Salerno to Tunis Ferry: Grimaldi Only, One Weekly Service

With Grimaldi Lines

The Salerno–Tunis ferry is operated only by Grimaldi Lines, with one weekly service each way depending on the period. GNV does not have this line: its routes to Tunis leave from Genoa, Civitavecchia and Palermo.

If your date does not fit, there are other real connections to Tunis: Palermo–Tunis (GNV all year round and Grimaldi), Genoa–Tunis (GNV and CTN) and Civitavecchia–Tunis (GNV and Grimaldi).

This route crosses to a country outside the EU: passport compulsory, valid for at least 3 months. Grimaldi asks you to check in 4 h before, and with a car, prior registration on Smart Traveller.

Salerno Tunis ferry timetable

Grimaldi runs one weekly service each way in the periods shown on its website, and the calendar changes by period. That means a single departure day a week: there is no boat every day.

What to look at in the timetable

In the timetable above you see the real departures for your date. If the day you want has no sailing, look at the following week or compare with Palermo–Tunis, where GNV operates all year round.

Route

The Grimaldi line that links Salerno and Palermo continues to Tunis in some periods. The ship may call at Palermo before reaching Tunis; the timetable confirms the exact route of your departure.

This route is run by Grimaldi Lines with one weekly service each way. GNV does not operate it: its website lists Tunis only from Genoa, Civitavecchia and Palermo.

Other companies with Tunis from Italy and France: GNV (Genoa, Civitavecchia, Palermo), Grimaldi (Civitavecchia, Palermo, Salerno) and CTN (Genoa and Marseille), the latter with data from the press and aggregators, not from its website.

Salerno Tunis ferry price

The price you see above is the lowest recent one for an adult without a vehicle. With a single boat a week, the price for that day goes up as it fills. The car is paid separately according to its size, and the accommodation (cabin or seat) changes the total.

Grimaldi's discounts, such as those for children, do not apply to fixed fees or to services on board. Check in the search which fares appear for your departure.

Children and discounts on Salerno Tunis

Enter each passenger's age when you search. On its general website, Grimaldi applies free travel to under-3s and 50% of the fare to children from 3 to under 12; check that your departure to Tunis includes it.

Minors of Tunisian nationality cannot leave Tunisia without the authorisation of the Tunisian parent (Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

Salerno Tunis ferry with a car

Grimaldi takes cars (up to 1.90 m high and 5 m long), motorhomes, motorbikes and minibuses. For Tunis it adds requirements:

  • Prior registration on Smart Traveller: it gives you a QR code that you show on arrival at La Goulette.
  • Vans cannot carry luggage on the roof.
  • One vehicle per passenger and no goods for sale.
  • Original vehicle registration document and insurance with a Green Card: GNV requires it on its routes and it is the rule the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes for entry; for Grimaldi, confirm it.

According to the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, tourists cannot sell the car in Tunisia and the registration document is checked on departure.

Salerno Tunis ferry with a dog

Grimaldi takes dogs and cats if you add them to the ticket. In a cabin only with the «pet in cabin» service (paid separately, up to 3 pets). On outdoor decks, on a lead and muzzled.

We have not been able to verify the papers Tunisia requires for your animal to enter: ask the Tunisian Embassy before booking. More information in ferry with a dog.

Ports of Salerno and Tunis

How to get to the port of Salerno

Salerno is a coastal city in Campania, about 50 km from Naples. Grimaldi's specific terminal in Salerno is not in our data: your ticket states the check-in point.

Check-in for Tunis is early: 4 h before. Plan the journey to Salerno with plenty of time and do not count on arriving just in time, especially with a car.

Arrival in Tunis: the port of La Goulette

Grimaldi arrives at La Goulette, about 10 km from the centre of Tunis. The TGM train stops at «La Goulette Port» and by road you get there on the RN9 or the P1; there is parking nearby.

With a car, bring the Smart Traveller QR code, your passport, the vehicle registration document and the insurance. If you are not a resident, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminds you that at the port they ask for the paid hotel reservation and the return ticket.

How to continue your journey: other ports in Tunisia from Italy

All passenger ferries to Tunis arrive at the same port, La Goulette, about 10 km from the centre; the TGM train stops at «La Goulette Port». Changing the port of departure (Palermo, Civitavecchia or Genoa) does not change where you arrive, only how long the crossing takes and how often there is a boat.

If you are going from Campania to Palermo to connect, allow for an extra night on land.

Documents for travelling from Salerno to Tunis

Spaniards and other EU citizens

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months; the DNI alone is not enough.
  • No visa for up to 90 days (Spaniards).
  • Original document for everyone, children and babies included; the name on the ticket must match.

Tunisians and travellers with a Tunisian passport resident in Europe

Grimaldi applies the 3-month validity requirement to non-Tunisian passports. What exactly is asked of someone with a Tunisian passport in Tunisia we have not been able to check in an official source: confirm it with your consulate. With a car, permanent import for TRE (Tunisians resident abroad) and temporary admission have their own customs rules that should be checked with Tunisian customs.

I Love Ferry tips for Salerno Tunis

  1. Fix the day of the weekly boat first and organise the rest of the trip around it.
  2. Do not look for this route with GNV. If you have no day with Grimaldi, compare Palermo, Civitavecchia or Genoa.
  3. Register the car on Smart Traveller before leaving. Without the QR code, the procedure at La Goulette gets complicated.
  4. Print the hotel booking and return ticket if you are not a resident.
  5. Check in 4 h before, with or without a car.
