How long does the ferry from Tarifa to Tanger Ville take?

About an hour, on a fast ferry. AML's ships can take a little longer. The easterly levante wind often cancels or delays departures.

The Tarifa–Tanger Ville line is run by Baleària and AML (Africa Morocco Link); the search shows the ferry company for each departure. Baleària also sells five types of day trip by fast ferry, with a same-day return or with a hotel night, and a free shuttle bus between Algeciras and Tarifa for passengers with a ticket on this route, in both directions.

Tarifa to Tanger Ville ferry price

The price above is the lowest recent one for an adult on foot, with the date it was checked. It depends on the ferry company, the date, the car and whether it is one way or return. Baleària's day trips, with a return ticket, transfers and travel insurance, are bought separately and have their own price.

Children, babies and discounts

Children and babies have their own fare: enter the age when you search. Resident and large family discounts apply to domestic routes and do not apply here. Minors need their own passport and, if they are not travelling with both parents, may be asked for travel authorisation.

Tarifa to Tanger Ville ferry with a car

The route is used mainly on foot. If you travel with a car, enter the type, make and model when you search: if the search does not show a vehicle for your departure, there is no space.

  • Registration document, driving licence and insurance valid in Morocco.
  • If the car is not yours, a document of authorisation from the owner.
  • A car that enters Morocco is registered and must leave as the same car, with the person who brought it.

To cross with a car, Algeciras–Tanger Med usually has more departures and more space.

Travelling from Tarifa to Tanger Ville with a dog

Baleària accepts pets with the documents required by the EU and by Morocco: microchip, rabies vaccination and a health certificate or passport. Baleària is not responsible if the authorities of the country refuse entry. Ask before booking. More on travelling by ferry with a dog.

Tanger Ville (Morocco)

How to get to the port of Tarifa

The port of Tarifa is next to the old town, at the southern tip of the peninsula. During Operation Strait Crossing (Operación Paso del Estrecho) (from 15 June to 15 September) you are not allowed into the port more than two hours in advance. If you come from Algeciras without a car, the shuttle bus leaves from in front of the Algeciras maritime terminal and drops you in front of the one in Tarifa; you must always show your ticket to the driver.

Arriving in Tanger Ville: the port in the centre

Tanger Ville is the port of the city itself, on Avenue Mohamed VI. When you disembark you go through police control. From there, the medina and the centre are close by. It is much more practical than Tanger Med, which is about 40 km from the city.

Documents for going from Tarifa to Tangier

  • A valid passport for everyone, including minors, ideally with more than six months of validity. The Spanish DNI is not valid for entering Morocco.
  • No visa for tourism of up to 90 days if you are Spanish or from the EU; other nationalities should check Accès Maroc.
  • If you hold a Moroccan passport and live in Spain: bring your valid residence permit to return. A European permit or a Schengen visa does not replace Morocco's entry requirements.
  • If you have dual nationality: use the passport you will use to enter each country.
  • Baleària's table marks 'no passport' on two day trips, but Morocco always requires a passport: do not leave without it.

I Love Ferry tips for the Tarifa to Tanger Ville ferry

  • If you are going for the day, choose Tarifa. It is a one-hour crossing and the port of Tangier is in the centre.
  • Watch the wind. The levante cancels fast ferry departures: allow some margin and do not book your return to Europe with no time to spare.
  • During Operation Strait Crossing (OPE), with a fixed ticket and a tight arrival: they do not let you into the port of Tarifa more than two hours in advance.
  • Shuttle bus from Algeciras: if you are not going by car, it is free with your ticket.
  • Always take your passport, even if you are only going for six hours.
