Tenerife to La Palma Ferry: Port, Operators and How to Choose

With Fred Olsen, Balearia

The ferry from Tenerife to La Palma leaves from the port of Los Cristianos, in the south of Tenerife, and arrives at the port of Santa Cruz de La Palma. It is run by Baleària Canarias and Fred Olsen Express, with departures every day.

There is no ferry from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to La Palma. If you are setting out from the north or the metropolitan area, you first have to get to Los Cristianos, via the TF-1 or on the ferry company's Ferry Bus.

You can take a car with both ferry companies; the Canary Islands resident discount is 75% on the passenger fare and both have their own pet accommodation.

Tenerife to La Palma ferry timetable

Below you can see the departures for your date from Los Cristianos, with the ferry company for each one. Baleària sails every day of the year and Fred Olsen offers several departures a day, so there is always something to choose from.

An early departure gives you a whole day in La Palma; a mid-morning one is more comfortable if you are coming from Santa Cruz and need to reach Los Cristianos without rushing. Always check the last return sailing before you buy.

There are no departures scheduled on this route in the coming days. You can travel on these routes:

Indicative schedules and subject to variation by the ferry company for operational reasons without prior notice.

How long does the ferry from Tenerife to La Palma take?

Several hours: longer than to La Gomera and a good deal shorter than to the eastern islands. The timetable shows the exact duration of each departure and the ship. This is not a route to do in a hurry: leave a margin if you have a flight.

They are two ways of making the same crossing:

  • Baleària Canarias: daily departure, Easy Pass, Club and the option of continuing to La Gomera from Monday to Saturday from La Palma without leaving the ship.
  • Fred Olsen Express: several departures a day, Gold Class with priority boarding, tickets with changes of date, time or route for a year (except promotions) and its own Ferry Bus between Santa Cruz and Los Cristianos.

If what matters is the time, choose by timetable. If being able to change your trip matters, check the fare conditions.

Baleària Canarias's line on this route came from the former Naviera Armas (now operated by Baleària) and is today operated by Baleària Canarias.

Tenerife to La Palma ferry price

The price above is the lowest recent one for an adult without a vehicle. It depends on the date, the ferry company and what you add: car, motorbike, pet or upgraded seat.

If there are several of you with a car, Fred Olsen advertises savings packages for two to five people with a car, and both ferry companies have fares for young people and points programmes. Compare before deciding.

Resident discount on the Tenerife to La Palma ferry

Canary Islands residents get 75% off the passenger fare between islands. It does not apply to the car, the pet or extras.

You can calculate your resident price directly on I Love Ferry, at iloveferry.com/ferris, by switching on “Resident in the Canary Islands?” in the results search box; the 75% applies to the passenger fare only.

If you live in Tenerife and travel to La Palma often, look at Baleària's Easy Pass: a digital card in the app for boarding with a QR code without going to the ticket office, available on this line. It requires being a Club member and registering your residence. Full guide: Canary Islands resident discount.

Large family on the Tenerife to La Palma ferry

General large family: 20%; special: 50% off the passenger fare. It can be combined with the resident discount. Bring your valid certificate. Guide: ferry with large family discount.

Tenerife to La Palma ferry with a car

Both operators accept cars, motorbikes, vans and bicycles, and Baleària also takes caravans and motorhomes. Declare the vehicle when you book, with its dimensions; it cannot travel without a passenger.

If you are going to see La Palma over several days, it is worth taking your car: the roads are mountain roads. For a single day in the capital, going on foot is enough and you save the car's share of the ticket.

Tenerife to La Palma ferry with a dog

With Baleària there is Pet&You (mat next to the seat), Pet Friendly seat and Calm Kennels. With Fred Olsen, Pet Carrier (carrier, up to 10 kg), Pet Room (kennel on deck with camera) and Pet Sofa. In both cases you tell them when you book and places are limited. Neither accepts pets on the Ferry Bus. More: travelling by ferry with a dog.

Ports of Tenerife and La Palma

How to get to Los Cristianos, the departure port

The ferry leaves from Los Cristianos, in Arona, in the south. You get there via the TF-1. From Santa Cruz, allow a good hour by road.

Without a car, both ferry companies offer a free Ferry Bus from Santa Cruz (with Fred Olsen, limited places and booking 48 hours ahead; with Baleària, for passengers without a vehicle with a combined ticket). They do not accept pets. Arrive about 20 minutes beforehand on foot and 40 with a car.

Arrival in Santa Cruz de La Palma

The ship arrives in the capital of La Palma, next to the old town. From there the roads lead to the Caldera de Taburiente, the Roque de los Muchachos and the area of the Tajogaite volcano. With a car, the island is easier to get around; without one, you can rent a car in the capital.

How to continue your trip in La Palma

La Palma has public transport, but to get around it a car is best. People who travel without one usually stay near the port and rent a car for a day. If you continue to La Gomera from La Palma, Baleària does it from Monday to Saturday with a stop at Los Cristianos, without changing ship.

Documents for the Tenerife to La Palma ferry

Valid DNI, NIE or passport. With a car, vehicle registration document and insurance; with a pet, its documents; with a discount, proof of residence or large family status. Fred Olsen does not ask for a printed card: the document is enough.
