Almería to Ghazaouet Ferry: Boat to Algeria with Car and Documents
With Balearia · from 10 h
The Almería to Ghazaouet ferry links the port of Almería with Ghazaouet, in western Algeria. It is run by Baleària, with only a few sailings a week: check the search tool for the days a ferry runs.
Algeria requires Spanish citizens to have a visa and does not issue it at the border: apply at least four weeks ahead. If you live in Andalusia, you apply at the Consulate General of Algeria in Alicante.
If you hold an Algerian passport or dual nationality, Algeria treats you as an Algerian. Bring a valid passport and, to return to Spain, your valid residence permit if you are not an EU citizen.
GNV does not sail from Spain to Algeria: from Almería, the ferry company is Baleària.
Almería to Ghazaouet ferry timetable
This route has only a few sailings a week; it is not daily. The search tool shows the actual days and times for the date you choose, in the local time of each port. Start by checking which days a ferry runs and plan your trip around that.
The crossing takes several hours, but less than a full day. If the ferry leaves or arrives at night, bear that in mind for your onward journey by road on arrival.

How long does the Almería to Ghazaouet ferry take?
It is one of the shortest crossings between Spain and Algeria: a few hours, less than a day. The timetable shows the duration of each sailing. Add the boarding time in Almería and the police and customs formalities in Algeria, which can take a good while if you have a car.
Who runs the Almería to Ghazaouet ferry
The Almería–Ghazaouet route is run by Baleària, which connects Barcelona, Valencia and Almería with Algiers, Oran, Mostaganem and Ghazaouet. The Algeria lines of the former Naviera Armas (now run by Baleària) were transferred to Baleària.
GNV has routes to Algeria, but only from Sète and Civitavecchia: it does not sail from any Spanish port.
Almería to Ghazaouet ferry prices
The price you see above is the lowest recent price for an adult without a vehicle. With a car, the fare depends on the type of vehicle and its dimensions: enter the make and model when you search.
- Season: in summer and on the return dates at the end of the holidays there is more demand and fewer places for cars.
- Accommodation: seat or cabin, depending on the ship of each sailing.
- Return trip: with only a few sailings a week, it is worth checking both directions at once.
Almería to Ghazaouet ferry with a car
Taking your car is the norm on this route. Before booking, check these points, which Baleària applies on its Algeria lines:
- Cars with temporary plates or with a crossed-out carte grise are not allowed on board.
- If the driver is not the owner, you need an original written authorisation, signed by both and stamped by a notary, town hall or public body, with a copy of the ID card or passport of both.
- In summer Algeria has restricted the boarding of new cars, cars less than three years old and vans or goods vehicles. That restriction applied between 15 June and 15 September at the port of Algiers; check whether it affects Ghazaouet and whether it is repeated.
- A non-resident may keep their car in Algeria under temporary import for up to 90 days, extendable by another 90 days with customs authorisation. The car must leave with the person who imported it.
Bring the documents printed out. The dimensions you declare when booking must match those of the car.
Travelling to Algeria with a dog from Almería
Baleària allows travel with pets: up to 10 kg in a carrier in the lounges, a pet-friendly cabin for a maximum of two animals and, on some ships, a kennel. Add your pet when booking to see availability.
To enter Algeria, the pet needs a microchip, a passport with its vaccinations, a rabies vaccination more than 30 days and less than a year old, and a veterinary certificate endorsed 48 hours before leaving Spain. Quarantine is possible. More information at travelling by ferry with a dog.
Ports of Almería and Ghazaouet
How to get to the port of Almería
Ferries to Algeria and Morocco leave from the Almería ferry terminal, on the Muelle de Ribera, next to the city centre. If you have a car, follow the boarding signs inside the port and keep the car documents and those of all travellers to hand.
If you are coming from outside Andalusia, bear in mind that Almería is far from the main inland motorways: plan your arrival with time to spare, especially in summer.
Arriving in Ghazaouet: the port and onward travel
Ghazaouet is a port in the province of Tlemcen, in western Algeria. On disembarking you go through police control and Algerian customs, with your car if you have one. From there you continue by road towards Tlemcen and the rest of the country.
We have no verified data on the terminal or the processing times: check what your ticket says.
Documents for travelling to Algeria by ferry
If you are a Spanish citizen
- Passport with more than six months' validity. The ID card is not valid.
- Visa required: it is not issued at the border. Apply at least four weeks ahead and make sure it covers all your dates. Residents of Andalusia apply at the Consulate General of Algeria in Alicante.
If you have an Algerian passport or dual nationality
- Algeria considers you fully Algerian: you enter and leave under Algerian rules, with limits on consular assistance. Check with your consulate which passport you should travel with.
- For the car, the ferry companies ask for a copy of the passport and, where applicable, of the residence permit or visa abroad.
- Algerian minors: parental authorisation, valid for three months, and exit from Algeria on an Algerian passport.
If you live in Spain without being an EU citizen
To return to Europe you need a valid passport and a valid residence permit, or a Schengen visa. Without the right documents, the authorities may refuse entry and the ferry company may not refund the ticket.
Algeria has limits on money: the dinar is not convertible and cannot be taken out. Declare cash if you exceed the thresholds and carry medication in its original packaging.
I Love Ferry tips for the Almería to Ghazaouet ferry
- Do not buy the ticket without having the visa (if you need one): with few sailings a week, changing date can be difficult.
- Check the calendar first and then plan the rest: the days with a ferry decide everything.
- Bring everything printed: carte grise, the owner's authorisation if the car is not yours, passports and ticket.
- Arrive early if you have a car: boarding and the formalities in Algeria take longer in summer.
- Book the car early if you travel in July or August: car places sell out before passenger places.
