Nador to Motril Ferry: Seasonal Route, Car and Documents

With Balearia

There is a direct ferry from Nador to Motril only in summer: according to Ferryhopper, the route is advertised under the Naviera Armas brand (now operated by Baleària), which is sold at the same time and redirects to Baleària, from July to early September, with fewer return sailings than outward ones. Outside the season there is no direct ferry.

Alternatives for getting back from Nador to the mainland: Nador–Almería (Baleària and Trasmed, almost daily), Nador–Barcelona or Nador–Sète (GNV). You can also cross the border from Beni Enzar into Melilla and take a ferry from there.

To enter the EU you need a valid passport and, if you are not an EU citizen, a valid residence permit or a Schengen visa.

State the type, make and model when searching. From Motril, the A-44 takes you to Granada and the A-7 to Almería and Málaga.

Before leaving Morocco

  • The car that leaves must be the one that came in: it is registered with Moroccan customs. If it does not match, there are problems on departure.
  • Carry the temporary import declaration (D16TER) you submitted on entry and the car's papers.
  • Do not take Moroccan currency out of the country: it is prohibited.

Ports of Nador and Motril

How to get to the port of Nador (Beni Ansar)

The port is in Beni Ansar, a few kilometres from the city of Nador. You go through Moroccan police and customs before boarding. With a car, carry passports, boarding pass, the car's papers and D16TER.

During Operation Strait Crossing (Operación Paso del Estrecho) (from mid-June to mid-September) traffic increases in both directions. Guides recommend avoiding weekends in July and August, and arriving at the port between an hour and a half and three hours early with a car, and between 45 minutes and an hour on foot. Car places are limited in summer.

Arrival at the port of Motril

The port of Motril is on the coast of Granada, about 70 km from the provincial capital. You arrive in the EU: passport control and, with a non-EU passport, entry checks.

How to get from Nador to Motril without a direct ferry

The Almería ferries and the direct Motril ones arrive at the port of Beni Enzar, about 13 km from Nador and very close to the border with Melilla.

If you combine a ferry to Melilla with an overland crossing, allow for the border control and customs. Exact conditions for the crossing by nationality and with a car: ask the consulate or the ferry company before booking.

Documents for travelling from Nador to Motril by ferry

If you travel with a Spanish (or EU) passport

  • Valid passport, with more than six months of validity. The DNI is not valid for entering Morocco.
  • No visa for tourism; maximum stay of 90 days per six-month period.

If you travel with a Moroccan passport or dual nationality

  • Carry your valid Moroccan passport. If you also hold Spanish or other EU nationality, carry both passports and show the relevant one at each checkpoint.

If you are not from the EU and are returning to Europe

GNV states that non-EU passengers on international routes need a valid passport and a valid residence permit, or a Schengen visa.
