Barcelona to Ciutadella Ferry: With Baleària to Western Menorca
With Balearia · 10 to 15 weekly departures · 3:30 hours - 9 hours
The ferry from Barcelona to Ciutadella is operated only by Baleària: it leaves from its terminal in the port of Barcelona and arrives at Ciutadella, on the west coast of Menorca. No other shipping company links these two ports.
Baleària combines fast ferry and conventional ferry depending on the day. The overnight ferry lets you sleep in a cabin; the fast ferry cuts the crossing to a few hours. The timetable shows which ship makes each sailing.
Ciutadella is about 45 km from Mahón. If your accommodation is in the east or south of the island, look at Barcelona to Mahón, operated by GNV and Trasmed.
Residents of the Balearic Islands get a 75% discount on the passenger fare, but not on the car. You can take a car, motorbike, bicycle or dog.
Barcelona to Ciutadella ferry timetable
Below you have the sailings for the date you choose. On this route the same type of ship does not sail every day: some days there is a fast ferry and others a conventional ferry, and the overnight one is the one that lets you sleep on board. Before paying, check in the timetable which type of ship each sailing is and what time it arrives.
Fast ferry or overnight ferry
If you are short of time or want to make the most of your first day on the island, choose the fast ferry. If you prefer to arrive rested, with a loaded car or with children, the overnight ferry with a cabin is usually more comfortable. On the overnight ferry, Baleària also offers a late disembarkation service in the cabin, so you do not have to get up in the early hours.
Return
The return sails from Ciutadella to Barcelona. See its sailings on the Ciutadella to Barcelona ferry page.

Baleària, the shipping company from Barcelona to Ciutadella
This route is run only by Baleària. Neither GNV nor Trasmed link Barcelona with Ciutadella: they operate to Mahón (Trasmed does sell Ciutadella–Alcudia, from Mallorca). Baleària uses two types of ship in Menorca:
- Fast ferry: smaller and faster, with standard, superior or VIP seats, a cafeteria, a children's area and a shop. It takes vehicles and pets.
- Conventional ferry: larger, with seats, double or quadruple cabins, a restaurant, a bar, a shop and a pet area, designed for long crossings.
Baleària publishes in its help centre the rules on changes, cancellations and compensation for delays, and has a loyalty programme, Baleària Club, with points for travelling.
Barcelona to Ciutadella ferry price
The price shown above is the lowest recent one for an adult without a car, with its date. Your ticket changes with the date, how far ahead you book, the accommodation (seat or cabin) and the vehicle. In addition, Baleària has two types of fare with different conditions:
- Mini fare: does not allow the ticket to be cancelled; it does allow a change of date or time, with two changes without penalty.
- Reduced fare: allows changes without penalty, although you may have to pay the difference if the new ticket is more expensive, and the refund depends on how many days are left before the trip.
Choose the Mini only if you are sure of your dates. Changing the passenger's name is not allowed on any fare.
Balearic resident discount
If you live in the Balearic Islands you get a 75% discount on the passenger ticket. It does not apply to the car, pets or extras. When you search, say that you are a resident in the search tool at iloveferry.com/ferris.
- All passengers on the same booking must be residents; if you are travelling with someone who is not, make two bookings.
- With an ID card or NIE and a residence certificate, Baleària validates residence online. If that fails, go to the ticket office with the original.
- It can be combined with the youth card and over-60s discounts.
- More information in Balearic resident discount.
Large family discount
With a valid Spanish large family certificate you get 20% (general) or 50% (special) off the passenger fare on domestic routes like this one. It does not apply to the car. Bring the original certificate and legible photocopies, and the identity document of each traveller. On your first booking it is advisable to go to the ticket office to prove it. If someone in the family has another concession, make separate bookings. More in ferry with large family discount.
Barcelona to Ciutadella ferry with a car
You can take a car, motorbike, van, motorhome or bicycle. Enter the vehicle type, make and model when you search: the price and boarding depend on the dimensions booked. If the car you bring is not the one on the ticket, boarding is not guaranteed.
Which quay your car leaves from in Barcelona
Foot passengers go to the North Terminal, in the World Trade Center. With a car, the quay depends on the ship: the conventional ferry uses the Lepanto quay and the fast ferry a different adjoining quay. Baleària communicates the location a few hours before departure and may change it because of the weather or port operations, so check your email and your mobile before you go.
Low Emission Zone
The port of Barcelona is a Low Emission Zone. If your car has no environmental label, check beforehand whether it can drive there or needs a permit, to avoid fines.
Arrival time and the car deck
With a car, Baleària asks you to arrive at least 90 minutes before. During the crossing the car deck is closed: take with you what you will need. Suitcases may stay in the car, but never a pet.
Barcelona to Ciutadella ferry with a dog
Baleària accepts dogs and other pets, and there are three options depending on your dog:
- Pet-friendly seat: your pet travels with you, in a carrier, with a maximum of 8 kg including the carrier (up to 60 x 35 x 35 cm). It is not on every ship: if it does not appear when you book, it is not available.
- Pet-friendly cabin: one animal can go, or two if together they do not exceed 30 kg. It can stay alone in the cabin.
- Calm kennel: a ventilated space on deck or in the garage, without you accompanying it during the crossing; on some ships there is a camera so you can see it from your mobile.
It can never stay in the car. Animals disembark last and dangerous dogs travel on a lead and muzzled. Add the pet when you book and bring its health record. More in travelling by ferry with a dog.

How to get to the port of Barcelona (North Terminal)
The Baleària ferry leaves from the World Trade Center area, at the Barcelona Norte quay. On foot, you enter through the Baleària office at the North Terminal. There are metro, taxi and a port shuttle service; the city centre is close.
The exact terminal may vary depending on the ship and the day, and Baleària confirms it a few hours beforehand. If you have doubts, write to the Baleària chat the question "where do I have to board?" and they will send you the GPS location.
Arriving in Ciutadella: the west coast of Menorca
The ship arrives at Ciutadella, in the west of the island. From here the beaches of the west are close, such as Cala Turqueta, Son Saura or Cala Mitjana, and you save crossing the island if your accommodation is in this area.
Ciutadella has no train. To get around there are buses, taxis or hire cars. Book your hire car in advance if you arrive in summer.
From Ciutadella to Mahón and the rest of Menorca
Mahón is about 45 km away by road, roughly three quarters of an hour by car, and a bus links the two towns in about an hour. If your trip ends in Mahón or at the airport, first compare the direct ferry to Mahón: you save the drive, although the overnight crossing takes longer.
Documents for boarding
This is a domestic route: adults need a valid ID card, NIE or passport. If you use the resident discount, bring the residence certificate; if you use the large family one, the original certificate. If you travel with a car, have the vehicle registration document and insurance to hand, and check that the number plate on the ticket is the car's. You can change it at no cost in "My bookings" if the make and model do not change.
I Love Ferry tips for Barcelona to Ciutadella
- Choose the port by where you sleep. Ciutadella and Mahón are about 45 km apart: getting it wrong means three quarters of an hour by car on the first day.
- If you travel with a car, confirm the quay the day before. The ferry and the fast ferry do not board at the same place and Baleària can change it.
- Enter a valid mobile number when you book. In the event of a weather cancellation, Baleària notifies you by WhatsApp or SMS and offers a change of port or time with any fare; if there is no alternative, a free change or a full refund.
- Beware of the Mini fare. It cannot be cancelled. If your plans may change, look at the Reduced one.
- Arriving in the early hours? On the overnight ferry you can add late disembarkation to stay in the cabin.
If Baleària calls you about a change, it will never ask you to pay by phone or send you payment links.
