Las Palmas to San Sebastián de La Gomera Ferry: No Direct, Change Needed

With Balearia

There is no direct ferry from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to San Sebastián de La Gomera. The trip is made on two ferries with a stop in Tenerife: Las Palmas to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a transfer by land to Los Cristianos, and Los Cristianos to San Sebastián.

Baleària Canarias sells the trip as a combined ticket, in two independent bookings. The final leg is run by Baleària Canarias and Fred Olsen Express; Fred Olsen sails from Agaete, not from Las Palmas.

These are separate tickets: leave a margin between ferries. It is a long day and it is not advisable to do a day return trip.

Timetable for the trip from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to San Sebastián de La Gomera

There is no single timetable because there is no direct ferry: each stage has its own. Start with stage 3, Los Cristianos to La Gomera, which has the fewest sailings, and work backwards from there to decide what time to leave Las Palmas.

The return trip

There are no departures scheduled on this route in the coming days. You can travel on these routes:

Indicative schedules and subject to variation by the ferry company for operational reasons without prior notice.

How long does it take to get from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to San Sebastián de La Gomera?

Allow a long day: two ferries, the transfer along the TF-1 and the waits between them. The ferry companies do not give a figure for the whole trip and adding up timetables is not reliable, because each booking is independent. A day return trip is not recommended.

Between Gran Canaria and La Gomera there is no direct line from any ferry company: the trip is made up of legs.

  • Baleària Canarias offers it as a "combined ticket" of two bookings: Las Palmas to Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Los Cristianos to San Sebastián de La Gomera. Baleària only sails from Las Palmas, not from Agaete.
  • Fred Olsen Express runs Agaete to Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Los Cristianos to San Sebastián de La Gomera. It does not sail from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
  • The transfer between Santa Cruz and Los Cristianos is by land, by Ferry Bus or by car.

Fred Olsen's website advertises "Gran Canaria – La Gomera" without naming the ports. We do not know whether it is direct, with a stop or a combination, so here we treat it as a trip in legs.

Price of the trip from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to San Sebastián de La Gomera

The total price is the sum of two ferry tickets, one for each ferry company or each booking, plus the transfer between ports if you pay for it separately. The "from" price you see on a leg page is not the price of the whole trip. With Baleària the two bookings are independent; with Fred Olsen they are also independent of each other.

The Ferry Bus between Santa Cruz and Los Cristianos is free according to the ferry companies, but it has to be added when you buy.

Canary Islands resident discount: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to San Sebastián de La Gomera

Canary Islands residents get a 75% discount on the passenger fare of each ferry on the trip. It does not apply to the car, the pet or extras such as the cabin.

  • Calculate your resident price on I Love Ferry, at iloveferry.com/ferris, by switching on "Canary Islands resident?" on each leg of the trip.
  • It is checked against your DNI; if your residence is not verified, bring the certificate from the town hall.
  • More information in Canary Islands resident discount.

Large family discount on the trip from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to San Sebastián de La Gomera

The regulations give 20% to a general large family and 50% to a special one on the passenger fare of regular national maritime transport, and on this trip you have to request it on each booking. Bring the valid certificate. Guide: ferry with a large family discount.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to San Sebastián de La Gomera ferry with a car

With a car it is possible, but each stage is a different booking: check that the vehicle is taken on both and declare the same dimensions on each. Between Santa Cruz and Los Cristianos you drive yourself along the TF-1, a good hour on the road, and that time counts in your margin.

If the car is a rental, ask the company beforehand whether it can leave the island; many do not allow it. On La Gomera it is often worth renting there if you are only staying a few days.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to San Sebastián de La Gomera ferry with a dog

With a pet the trip gets complicated in Tenerife: the Ferry Bus between Santa Cruz and Los Cristianos does not take pets, neither Baleària's nor Fred Olsen's. You will have to make that journey on your own, by car, taxi or bus.

On the ferries, each ferry company has its own accommodation: Pet&You, Pet Friendly seat and calm kennels with Baleària; Pet Carrier, Pet Room and Pet Sofa with Fred Olsen. With Fred Olsen a microchip is compulsory and the pet has its own ticket. More in travelling by ferry with a dog.

How to get to Las Palmas port (La Luz)

Baleària sails from La Luz port, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It has a free Ferry Bus on some sailings, between the Oficina de la Fundación Puerto de Las Palmas and the Nelson Mandela quay (La Esfinge); pets cannot use it.

Do not confuse Las Palmas with Agaete: Agaete is Fred Olsen's port, on the other side of the island.

Arriving at San Sebastián de La Gomera

The last ferry arrives at San Sebastián, next to the centre of the island's capital. From there buses leave for Valle Gran Rey, Hermigua and Playa de Santiago, and there are taxis and rental cars.

How to connect the ferries in Tenerife

These are the three stages, with the departure port, the arrival port and who runs each one:

2Santa Cruz de TenerifeLos CristianosBy land: Ferry Bus or car (TF-1)Not a ferry
3Los CristianosSan Sebastián de La GomeraBaleària Canarias or Fred Olsen ExpressLos Cristianos to San Sebastián de La Gomera

If you leave from Agaete instead of Las Palmas, stage 1 is run by Fred Olsen Express: Agaete to Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Santa Cruz and Los Cristianos are on opposite sides of Tenerife, a good hour apart along the TF-1. Without a car, the free Ferry Bus is added when you buy, has limited places and does not take pets; with Fred Olsen it is booked at least 48 hours in advance. With a car, you drive yourself.

Documents for travelling from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to San Sebastián de La Gomera

This is a domestic trip within the EU: a valid ID document (DNI, NIE or passport) for each passenger and each ticket. With a resident or large family discount, bring the document that proves it. With a car, the vehicle registration document and insurance. As the tickets are independent, keep the booking reference for each leg. With a pet, the health passport and microchip.

I Love Ferry tips for this trip

  • Do not look for a direct ferry. There isn't one: it is two bookings and you buy them separately.
  • Margin between ferries. If the first one arrives late, the La Gomera one does not wait. Leave a generous margin between arriving in Santa Cruz and leaving from Los Cristianos, which includes the TF-1.
  • Look at stage 3 first. Los Cristianos to San Sebastián has the fewest sailings; work out the rest from there.
  • Luggage. Without a car, you carry it yourself on the Ferry Bus and on each ferry; travel light or plan the transfer by car.
  • Resident. Switch on "Canary Islands resident?" on each leg at iloveferry.com/ferris; the 75% applies to the passenger fare only.
