Palma to Barcelona Ferry: Baleària, Trasmed and GNV

Palma to Barcelona Ferry: Baleària, Trasmed and GNV

With Balearia, Trasmed, GNV · 10 to 14 weekly departures · 6:45 hours - 8:30 hours

To get from Palma de Mallorca to Barcelona by ferry there are three ferry companies: Baleària, Trasmed and GNV. They sail from the port of Palma and arrive in Barcelona on crossings of several hours, with departures almost every day of the year.

The duration depends on the ferry company and the ship: the fastest take less and the conventional ones more. With a car, a pet or a cabin, each ferry company's rules are different.

Balearic residents get a 75% discount on the passenger ticket, not on the car. You can travel on foot, with a car or with a dog.

If your port is Alcudia, in the north of Mallorca, it has its own page with Barcelona.

Palma to Barcelona ferry timetable

Below you have the departures for the date you choose, with ferry company, departure time, arrival time and type of ship. Three ferry companies compete on this route, so each day there is usually more than one departure to choose from. Pay attention above all to two things:

  • The arrival time in Barcelona, because it sets what you can do that day: a connection, a car hire or getting to the hotel.
  • Whether the departure is by day or by night. Depending on the ferry company and the day, there are day and night departures; the timetable tells you and, on night ones, you can book a cabin.

In summer, Easter and long weekends there are more departures. The return is on the Barcelona Palma ferry page.

How long does the ferry from Palma to Barcelona take? Which ship will you get?

There are clear differences between the three ferry companies: the fast ships of Baleària and GNV take the least, and Trasmed's conventional ferries are the slowest. You see the exact duration of each departure in the timetable above and in the data sheet.

In rough seas, a fast ship may take longer or change its departure. The ships on each departure appear in the timetable: open their page to see accommodation and services.

Three ferry companies run Palma–Barcelona. Each has its own rules, and that matters more than a few minutes' difference:

Baleària

  • Ferries and fast ferries; on some ships you can choose your seat at online check-in, which opens 72 hours before.
  • It notifies you by WhatsApp or SMS if the departure changes, if you gave a mobile number when booking.
  • Pets: carrier in the lounge up to 10 kg, pet friendly seat and cabin on some ships, and a kennel.
  • Additional late disembarkation service in a cabin on Barcelona–Palma night departures.

Trasmed (Trasmed GLE)

  • Conventional ferries from the San Beltrán quay in Barcelona.
  • Luggage with no weight limit; pets in an adapted cabin, a seat or kennels.
  • Its own discounts for Balearic residents, large families, military personnel and groups.

GNV

  • Up to two suitcases as luggage; a cabin for pets with limited places, or a kennel.
  • myGNV Club for members.
  • With a car, you cannot be on the car deck during the crossing.

Palma to Barcelona ferry price

The price you see above is the lowest recent fare for an adult without a car. On a route with three ferry companies, the price difference between departures on the same day can be large, and that is why it pays to compare in a single search.

  • The type of ship (faster or slower) and the ferry company.
  • The accommodation: seat or cabin.
  • The date: summer, long weekends and Fridays or Sundays cost more.
  • The car, which is paid separately and according to its measurements.

If your trip is flexible, compare several days: the saving usually comes from choosing the least popular departure.

Balearic resident discount: Palma Barcelona

If you live in the Balearic Islands you get a resident discount on the passenger ticket (according to each ferry company's resident fare; check in the search), with Baleària as well as with Trasmed and GNV. It does not apply to the car, the pet or extras such as wifi.

  • Say you are a resident in the search on iloveferry.com/ferris. On a booking, all passengers must be residents.
  • Residence is validated with DNI or NIE; if that fails, you will have to prove it at the ticket office with the certificate of registration (empadronamiento).
  • Residents with only a temporary residence certificate may not be entitled: confirm before booking.

More in Balearic resident discount.

Large family on the Palma Barcelona ferry

On domestic routes, large families with a Spanish certificate get 20% (general) or 50% (special) off the passenger ticket. It does not apply to the car. With Baleària, the first time (or if more than six months have passed since your last trip) you have to prove it at the ticket office, so the digital boarding pass will not arrive: allow plenty of time. Bring the original valid certificate and each traveller's identity document. Details in ferry with large family discount.

Palma to Barcelona ferry with a car

All three ferry companies accept cars, motorbikes, vans and motorhomes. Enter the type and the real measurements when you book: the price depends on them and what you declare has to match your vehicle.

In Barcelona, Baleària boards the cars from Palma at a quay attached to its terminal; Trasmed and GNV, in the San Beltrán area. The quay may change because of weather or port operations, so check the notice before you go. The port is a low-emission zone: check that your car can enter.

Palma to Barcelona ferry with a dog

All three ferry companies accept dogs, with different rules that you can use to decide:

  • Baleària: up to 10 kg in a carrier in the lounge; pet friendly seat or cabin on some ships; kennel.
  • GNV: cabin for pets (limited places) or kennel.
  • Trasmed: adapted cabins, seat (under 8 kg, in a carrier) and kennels.

Ports of Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona

How to get to the port of Palma

The port of Palma is next to the city centre, with access on foot or by bus. The airport is a few kilometres away.

Without a car, arrive at the port at least one hour early; with a car, earlier, because vehicle boarding closes sooner. The exact time is on your boarding pass.

Arriving in Barcelona: North Terminal and San Beltrán

In Barcelona there are two areas depending on the ferry company. Baleària has its foot-passenger terminal at the North Terminal, next to the World Trade Center; Trasmed and GNV sail from the San Beltrán quay. Confirm the exact terminal on your ticket: Baleària communicates the location a few hours before.

From both areas there are taxis and public transport to the centre.

Documents for travelling from Palma to Barcelona

I Love Ferry tips for travelling from Palma to Barcelona

  1. Compare arrival, not just price. A slower ship may be cheaper, but it takes hours off your arrival day.
  2. Choose the ferry company by your dog or your luggage. The pet rules are very different between the three.
  3. If it is windy, a fast ship is the first to suffer. With Baleària they offer you alternatives whatever the fare, and a free change or full refund if they cancel because of bad weather with no alternative. Enter your mobile number when you book so they can notify you.
  4. Do the online check-in with Baleària: that is how the digital pass arrives. With a large family discount, go to the ticket office.
  5. With a car, confirm the Barcelona quay the day before: it can change.
