Palma to Mahón ferry with Trasmed: few sailings, half a day

With Trasmed · from 6 h

To get from Palma to Mahón (Maó) by ferry there is only one ferry company: Trasmed. It leaves from the port of Palma and arrives at the port of Mahón, in Menorca, on a longer line linking Menorca, Mallorca, Ibiza and the mainland.

It has few sailings a week and is a long crossing, taking half a day. First see which days have a ship and plan the trip around that date.

If you need another day, the alternative is to drive to Alcudia, about 55 km, and cross to Ciutadella with Baleària or Menorca Lines; after that it is about 45 km to Mahón.

Balearic residents get a resident discount on the passenger fare, not on the car.

How long does the ferry from Palma to Mahón take?

A good few hours: it is a half-day crossing, much longer than the short hop from Alcudia to Ciutadella. You can see the exact duration of your sailing in the timetable. There are cabins and seats, a restaurant and a cafeteria.

A useful comparison: via Alcudia you add about 55 km by road, a short crossing by ship and another 45 km from Ciutadella to Mahón. It is more steps, but more sailings.

It is run by Trasmed GLE, part of the Grimaldi group and the successor to the former Trasmediterránea in the Balearics. It is the only operator on this pair in our data.

  • Conventional ferries, not fast ferries.
  • Luggage with no weight limit.
  • Discount for Balearic residents and discounts for large families, military personnel and groups.
  • Pets: adapted cabin, seat (under 8 kg, in a carrier) or kennels.

Baleària does not link Palma with Menorca: in Menorca, it operates from Ciutadella, and reaches Ciutadella from Alcudia and Barcelona.

Palma to Mahón ferry price

The price you see above is the lowest recent one for an adult without a car in a seat. The total changes with:

  • Seat or cabin: the cabin is paid separately; on a daytime crossing many travellers only book one if they sail at night.
  • The car: it is paid separately from the driver and depends on its exact dimensions.
  • Balearic resident: a resident discount on the passenger fare, not on the car.
  • Changes: with Trasmed, changing your ticket at the port itself costs money. Better to do it beforehand.

Balearic resident discount

If you live in the Balearics you get a resident discount on the Trasmed passenger ticket (according to each ferry company's resident fare; check in the search tool). It does not apply to the car or the pet.

  • Say you are a resident in the search tool at iloveferry.com/ferris and carry your DNI or NIE and your certificate of residence.
  • All passengers on the booking must be residents; if not, split the bookings.

More in Balearic resident discount.

Large family discount

On domestic routes, the Spanish title gives 20% (general) or 50% (special) off the fare. Trasmed mentions discounts for large families; confirm the percentage when you book. It does not apply to the car. Guide: ferry with a large family discount.

Palma to Mahón ferry with a car

Trasmed carries cars on this line. State the exact type and dimensions when you book; if you exceed the usual ones or are towing a trailer, check with the ferry company first. The vehicle price does not include the driver: you need to add the passenger ticket. At the port of Palma, arrive with time to spare: boarding with a vehicle closes earlier than for foot passengers, and the exact time is on your boarding card.

There is no limit on cars in Menorca in our data.

Palma to Mahón ferry with a dog

Trasmed takes pets in an adapted cabin, a seat (under 8 kg, in a carrier) or kennels. Bring the health card up to date. On a half-day journey, the adapted cabin is the most comfortable option for your dog. More in travelling by ferry with a dog.

On board: seat, cabin and luggage

On a half-day crossing, a seat is enough by day. If the ship leaves late or you want to sleep, a cabin helps. There is a restaurant and a cafeteria. Trasmed does not limit luggage or weight (only what you can carry up in one go). With a car, the car deck is not accessible during the crossing.

Ports of Palma (Mallorca) and Mahón (Maó)

How to get to the port of Palma

The port of Palma is next to the city centre, on foot or by city bus. It has several terminals: Trasmed uses its own, so check your ticket for the quay it boards from. If you are coming from the airport, the journey is short by taxi or bus.

Arriving in Mahón: the port is in the city

The port of Mahón (Maó) is inside the city: the centre is a few minutes' walk away, and the airport is about 6 km away. If you are staying in western Menorca, Ciutadella is about 45 km by road; there is no train, only bus and car hire.

Documents for the Palma to Mahón ferry

Domestic route: adults travel with an original, valid DNI, NIE or passport. Children under 14 without a document can board with the family record book or the Civil Registry certificate, always with their parent or guardian; when booking, tick the option for a minor without a DNI. With a discount, bring the certificate of residence or the large family title.
