Barcelona to Mahón Ferry: GNV and Trasmed, Overnight Crossing

Barcelona to Mahón Ferry: GNV and Trasmed, Overnight Crossing

With Trasmed, GNV · 8 to 10 weekly departures · 7:45 hours - 8:30 hours

The Barcelona to Mahón ferry is run by GNV and Trasmed. It leaves the port of Barcelona and arrives at the port of Mahón, right in the town centre of the capital of Menorca. It is an overnight crossing with cabins.

There is no fast ferry on this route: the ships are conventional ferries and sail at night, so it is best to book a cabin. Check the departures calendar in the timetable, because it is not the same every day.

If you prefer a shorter crossing, Baleària runs Barcelona to Ciutadella, in the west of Menorca, about 45 km from Mahón.

Residents of the Balearic Islands get a 75% discount on the passenger fare; it does not apply to the car.

Barcelona to Mahón ferry timetable

Below you can see the departures for the date you choose. They are overnight crossings: you leave Barcelona at night and arrive in Mahón in the small hours or in the morning, with time to continue your journey. GNV and Trasmed take turns on the calendar, so depending on the day you get the ship of one or the other.

There is not a departure every day at every time of year: in winter there are fewer and in summer some days are added. Check the timetable calendar before fixing your dates, especially if your return falls on a weekend.

Return

The return leaves from the port of Mahón. See the Mahón Barcelona ferry page.

Two ferry companies sail on this route, and both run overnight crossings on a conventional ferry:

  • GNV: an Italian ferry company with pet friendly cabins, seats and cabins. It has a members' club, myGNV Club, with discounts and points. It accepts up to two suitcases per passenger to the Balearic Islands.
  • Trasmed GLE (Grimaldi group): conventional overnight ships from Barcelona to the islands, with luggage with no weight limit and a discount for residents of the Balearic Islands.

They are not the same company and do not have the same rules on pets or luggage, so check which one you get before paying. There is no fast ferry on this route.

Barcelona to Mahón ferry price

The price shown above is the lowest recent fare for an adult without a car, with its date. It depends on the date, how far ahead you book and the accommodation: seat or cabin (cabins raise the total price). The car is paid separately from the passenger and varies with its dimensions.

As GNV and Trasmed charge different prices each day, compare departures on several days. If you travel both ways, check the return too: it may be cheaper with the other ferry company.

A warning from Trasmed: changing your ticket once you are at the port costs extra, so make changes beforehand.

Balearic resident discount

If you live in the Balearic Islands you get a resident discount on the passenger ticket (according to each ferry company's resident fare; check in the search), with GNV and with Trasmed. It does not apply to the car.

  • Say you are a resident in the search on iloveferry.com/ferris and take your DNI or NIE and your certificate of residence.
  • GNV has a fare for natives and residents with its own documentation page, which you should read before boarding.
  • If you travel with someone who is not a resident, make separate bookings.
  • More at Balearic resident discount.

Large family discount

Large families get 20% (general) or 50% (special) off the passenger fare on domestic routes. It does not apply to the car. You need the valid card and the identity document of each traveller. Trasmed mentions a specific large family discount in its listing; confirm the amount when you book. More at ferry large family discount.

Barcelona to Mahón ferry with a car

GNV and Trasmed carry cars, motorbikes, bicycles, vans and motorhomes. Enter the type of vehicle with its exact dimensions when you book, because the price and boarding depend on it. On GNV you cannot stay in the vehicle during the crossing.

Get to the port of Barcelona in good time: the check-in time is on your ticket and each ferry company sets it. In high season book ahead, especially if you are taking a car. Both GNV and Trasmed leave from the San Beltrán quay, according to I Love Ferry's current listing.

Barcelona to Mahón ferry with a dog

The rules depend on the ferry company that runs your departure:

  • GNV: accepts pets with up-to-date documents and has pet friendly cabins. They are not allowed in indoor common areas; on outdoor decks, they must be on a lead and, where applicable, muzzled.
  • Trasmed: adapted cabins, seat (under 8 kg, in a carrier) and kennels. Take the up-to-date health card.

As it is an overnight crossing, the most comfortable option is a cabin that accepts pets: pet friendly on GNV and adapted on Trasmed. Add the pet when you book. More at travelling by ferry with a dog.

On board on an overnight crossing: seat or cabin

The crossing is made at night and takes several hours, so most travellers book a cabin to sleep. With a seat you arrive more tired, but it is the cheapest. Both GNV and Trasmed offer cabins; GNV also has pet friendly cabins.

Ports of Barcelona and Mahón (Menorca)

Getting to the port of Barcelona (San Beltrán quay)

GNV and Trasmed board from the San Beltrán quay, in the Maritime Station area. You get there by metro to Drassanes, by taxi or by car. If you are driving, the port of Barcelona is a Low Emission Zone: check that your car may drive there or apply for the permit.

Confirm the terminal on your ticket: it is the information that overrides anything else.

Arriving in Mahón: a port inside the town

The ferry docks in the port of Mahón, which is in the town itself: the centre is a few minutes' walk away. The airport is about 6 km away, by car or taxi. There is no train, but there are buses and car hire.

Destination in MenorcaDistance from the port

Documents for boarding

It is a domestic route: adults need a valid DNI, NIE or passport. GNV accepts children under 14 travelling to the Balearic Islands with the family book if they have no document. With a resident or large family discount, take the certificate of residence or the original card. With a car, have the vehicle registration document and valid insurance.
