Barcelona to Tanger Med Ferry: Long Crossing with Car, Cabin and Passport

With GNV

The Barcelona to Tanger Med ferry is a crossing of more than a day, with nights on board, and few departures a week. GNV publishes it as Barcelona–Tangier: confirm the port of arrival on your ticket.

With a Spanish passport you need a valid passport with more than six months' validity: the DNI is not accepted, not even for minors. With a car, the vehicle registration document and insurance.

If you live in Spain with a Moroccan passport, to return take your passport and your valid residence permit, or a Schengen visa.

To cross in a few hours, look at Algeciras or Almería.

Barcelona to Tanger Med ferry timetable

There are few departures a week, more often in summer. In the search tool you see the days and times for your date, in the local time of each port. Look first for the days with a ferry and plan the trip around them.

The crossing includes nights on board: it is not a day return trip.

From Tanger Med to Barcelona

The return has its own page: Tanger Med to Barcelona ferry.

There are no departures scheduled on this route in the coming days. You can travel on these routes:

Indicative schedules and subject to variation by the ferry company for operational reasons without prior notice.

How long does the ferry from Barcelona to Tanger Med take?

More than a day, with one or two nights on board, depending on the departure. It is much longer than the Strait crossing from Algeciras, which takes a couple of hours. In the timetable you see the duration of each departure.

The ferry company listed on its own website is GNV, which publishes the route as Barcelona–Tangier, with higher frequencies in summer. It has cabins and reclining seats.

On ILF this route currently appears with no confirmed ship and with data that contradict each other. Before booking, check the ferry company and the port of arrival shown in the offer: those are the ones that count.

Barcelona to Tanger Med ferry price

The price you see above is the lowest recent price for one adult without a vehicle. On a crossing with nights, the accommodation weighs a lot: seat or cabin. The car is paid according to type and measurements; enter the make and model when you search.

The cheapest way to cross to Morocco is usually the short ferry from Algeciras, but it means driving across the Peninsula.

Barcelona to Tanger Med ferry with a car

It is a route for people travelling with a loaded car from Catalonia. Bring:

  • Original vehicle registration document and a valid driving licence.
  • Insurance with the maximum cover (check that it includes Morocco).
  • If the car is not yours, a transfer document validated by the Moroccan consulate in Spain.
  • The D16TER temporary import form, filled in and printed.

The car that goes in must be the same one that comes out. During the crossing you cannot get to the car deck: take up to the cabin what you need. The dimensions you declare must match those of the car.

Travelling to Morocco with a dog from Barcelona

GNV accepts dogs and cats, included in the booking. There is a "Four-legged Friends" ("Amigos de cuatro patas") cabin, with limited places and a maximum of two animals, and kennels on deck. Bring a lead and a vaccination booklet.

Morocco requires a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and a health certificate; sometimes an antibody test. Confirm the official requirements. More information in travelling by ferry with a dog.

On board: cabin, seat and closed car deck

On a crossing with nights, a cabin is recommended. The car deck is closed during the crossing and you cannot get to the car. GNV does not limit luggage weight; hand luggage means personal items, with up to two suitcases as personal luggage.

Ports of Barcelona and Tanger Med

How to get to the port of Barcelona

The ferry leaves from the ferry terminals of the port of Barcelona; the ticket shows the exact terminal, and it is worth confirming it before you set off because the port has several. With a car, arrive early and follow the boarding signs.

Arriving in Tangier: Tanger Med and Tanger Ville

There are two ports with similar names: Tanger Med, about 40 km from the city, and Tanger Ville, in the centre. Check on your ticket which one you arrive at. On disembarking you go through police control and Moroccan customs. With a car, you take the motorway towards Tangier, Tetouan and the rest of the country.

Documents for travelling to Tangier by ferry from Barcelona

If you are a Spanish citizen

  • Passport with more than six months' validity; the DNI is not accepted.
  • No visa for tourism: 90 days per six-month period.
  • Minors: their own passport and travel authorisation if they are not travelling with both parents.

If you have a Moroccan passport or dual nationality

To enter Morocco, check with the consulate which document to use. To return to Spain as a non-EU national, bring your passport and your valid residence permit, or a Schengen visa. Without the right documents, the ferry company does not refund the ticket.

Up to 2,000 dirhams undeclared; local currency may not be taken out. Medicines in their original packaging and with a prescription.
