Trasmediterránea (Compañía Trasmediterránea S.A.) is one of Spain's oldest and most historically significant shipping companies, founded in 1916 to serve the island territories and North Africa. It was the leading ferry operator on routes between mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla. Today, under the Armas Trasmediterránea brand, it remains present on key routes in the Mediterranean, the Strait, and North Africa. Its most iconic connection is the Algeciras–Ceuta ferry.

FRS DFDS (formerly FRS Iberia-Maroc) is the only shipping company that operates all routes across the Strait of Gibraltar, connecting southern Spain and Gibraltar with Moroccan ports and the autonomous city of Ceuta. Today, FRS DFDS transports over 1.3 million passengers, 280,000 vehicles, and 125,000 cargo units every year, with a fleet of seven modern and efficient vessels deployed across its active routes.

Algérie Ferries (Entreprise Nationale de Transport Maritime de Voyageurs — ENTMV) is Algeria's main state-owned shipping company, headquartered in Algiers. It operates regular crossings in the Western Mediterranean, connecting Algerian ports with destinations in Spain and France, carrying out an average of 900 crossings per year. Its most popular routes are Alicante–Oran, Marseille–Algiers, and Barcelona–Algiers, with a fleet of vessels built in Spanish shipyards capable of carrying over 1,300 passengers and 300 vehicles per journey.

Nouris Elbahr Ferries is Algeria's first private shipping company, providing regular ferry services between the Western Mediterranean and major Algerian ports. Its two European bases are the port of Alicante and the port of Marseille, France, from which it operates crossings lasting between 14 and 24 hours to Oran, Algiers, Béjaïa, and Skikda. In Spain, its operations are managed by the shipping agent Ocean Port Shipping (OPS). The company is particularly significant for the large Algerian community living in Spain and France returning home during the summer, Ramadan, and holidays, as well as for freight hauliers crossing the Southern Mediterranean.

Corsica Linea (Corsica Linea SAS) is a French shipping company headquartered in Ajaccio, the capital of Corsica. From its first day, it established itself as the leading ferry operator on routes from Marseille to Corsica, also becoming a prominent operator to Algeria and Tunisia. Its vessels are instantly recognisable by their unmistakable red livery. The offer ranges from overnight crossings to Corsica —with the Marseille–Bastia route as its main service— to long overnight cruises to North Africa, such as the Marseille–Algiers ferry or the Marseille–Tunis crossing.
