Porto Torres to Barcelona Ferry: Getting Back from Sardinia to Catalonia
With Grimaldi Lines
To go from Sardinia to Barcelona by ferry, the option is Grimaldi Lines, which links the port of Porto Torres with Barcelona. It is a direct, long crossing, and it takes a car, motorbike, motorhome and pet.
Porto Torres is in the north-west of Sardinia, near Sassari. If your accommodation is in the south or east of the island, compare other ports first so you do not cross half of Sardinia by road.
You are travelling between two EU countries: a valid European DNI is enough, for minors too. Show the original document at boarding, with the same names as on the ticket.
Porto Torres to Barcelona ferry timetable
Above you can see the sailings for the date you choose. This line does not have the frequency of the short Mediterranean routes: sailings are spread out over the week and there is more choice in high season. That is why it is worth looking at the calendar before fixing your holiday days, not after.

The price shown above is the lowest we have found for an adult without a car. With Grimaldi, what moves the amount most is:
- The date: the return from Sardinia at the end of summer concentrates a lot of demand.
- The accommodation: seat or cabin; on a long crossing the cabin makes a big difference to your rest.
- The vehicle: paid separately and according to its total dimensions, including bike racks or roof boxes.
Children under three do not pay a fare with Grimaldi, and there are discounts for children, young people and people over 60 according to its website; the specific conditions appear in the search when you enter each traveller's age.
Children, young people and discounts on Porto Torres to Barcelona

There are, however, Grimaldi fares of its own: free up to the age of three (not yet turned three), a discount for children from three to twelve, and offers for young people from twelve to twenty-six and for people over 60. They do not apply to fixed taxes or on-board services. Enter each passenger's age and the website calculates the fare.

Porto Torres to Barcelona ferry with a dog
Grimaldi accepts dogs and cats, but the pet must be added to the ticket when booking. On the ship there is accommodation specifically for them; in the cabin they only travel with the pet in cabin service (up to three animals, with a bedding kit and a final clean). On the outer decks they must be on a lead and muzzled, and in the common areas only in a carrier and at the purser's discretion. Grimaldi recommends an anti-parasite certificate for the cabin. More information at travelling by ferry with a dog.

The car decks are closed during the crossing: take up to the cabin everything you will need, including medicines and documents.
Ports of Porto Torres and Barcelona
Port of Barcelona
How to get to the port of Porto Torres
The port of Porto Torres is on the north-west coast of Sardinia, next to the town of Porto Torres and about 20 km from Sassari. It is the port that suits you best if you are staying in the Alghero or Stintino area or on the island of Asinara.
For this route, Grimaldi asks you to arrive two hours ahead, with or without a vehicle (it is its rule for journeys to Spain and Greece). If you are travelling with a car, do not arrive at the last minute: a missed boarding means losing the ticket. We do not have an official figure for Grimaldi's exact terminal in Porto Torres: confirm it on your ticket.
Arriving at the Maritime Station in Barcelona
Grimaldi operates from the Maritime Station in Barcelona, in the port, next to the city centre. It is the same port its ships to Civitavecchia leave from, so if you are undecided between crossing to Sardinia or to Rome, the departure is the same.
With a car, follow the signs for the disembarkation area and leave through the port exits. Without a car, the centre of Barcelona is a short distance away.

- Grimaldi notice: the old paper DNI is no longer valid for travel to Spain or Greece with Grimaldi (since August). If you are travelling with Italians, check which document they carry.
- Physical driving licence and vehicle registration document if you take a car.
I Love Ferry tips for returning from Sardinia to Barcelona
- Book the cabin early: on long crossings and at the end of August it is the first thing to sell out.
- Show the original DNI and check the names: they must match the ticket; mistakes are fixed beforehand, not on the quay.
- Measure the car with everything it carries: the roof box or bike rack counts in the total dimensions.
- If you travel with a pet, add it when booking and choose the cabin service if you want it with you.
- Arrive with a margin: the route has few sailings, and missing one means waiting for the next.
